Will Rogers Commemorative float at the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1936

Description:
A tribute to Will Rogers, following his death the previous year, at the 1936 Tournament of Roses Parade, surrounded by an unknown number of spectators. A tribute by the Union Oil Company, the float depicts a riderless horse in front of a large star to represent Rogers's career. The float won the grand prize award for the parade.

Whittier's float "The Garden of Italy" in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1928

Description:
"The Garden of Italy" float with a floral fountain in the front supported by three women dressed in white: Violet Smith, Anna Lou Kimmel and Helen Smith. Trains of mytle and roses, flowing from the back of the float, are carried by five outwalkers: Margaret Leslie, Irina Richardson, Anna Hoogerzeil [Parker], Louise Logan and Bernice Baily. The Long Beach float with Venus, Virginia Johnson, in a sunburst throne with her attendants, Joan Slaughter, Margaret Burley, Mary Lou Turner and Gladys McCleary, dressed in Grecian robes in pastel shades. A huge peacock heads the float, with a fountain in the center supporting 2 green cockatoos with orchid tails. The float was photographerd at the intersection of Orange Grove. Blvd. and Colorado Blvd.

The "Treasure Ship" float with a Spanish galleon bearing golden gifts; the intended inhabitants of the float were driven away by the rain. The Pasadena Memorial Flagpole (Goodhue Flagpole) is visible behind the float in its original location in the middle of the intersection of Orange Grove and Colorado Boulevard. The float was entered by the Hotel Vista del Arroyo.

1927 was the first year the Rose Parade had a theme, "Songs in Flowers," with each float typifying a song. The theme of this float was "The end of a perfect day." Sherman Institute float in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1928

Description:
Float sponsored by the Sherman Institute, an off-reservation boarding school for Native American students. Now called the Sherman Indian High School, it opened in 1892 as the Perris Indian School and later changed its name to the Sherman Institute. On the right are four Native American students beside a decorative tepee. On the left are four Native American students dressed to represent trades taught at the school, with one young woman dressed as a nurse and one young man wearing a smock. Students identified in the newspaper article include Charles Bautista, Adelia Brown, Pearl Beuis, Samuel Cachora, Adolph Sambo Pahvitse, Elsie Sasalque, and Jose Tajete. The float is at the intersection of Orange Grove and Colorado Boulevard. Description:
Described as a red sea monster in the Los Angeles Times parade review, the creature appears to be a lobster standing guard over "Captain Kid's Treasure Chest." The Pasadena Memorial Flagpole (Goodhue Flagpole) is visible behind the float in its original location in the middle of the intersection of Orange Grove and Colorado Boulevard. The float, entered by the city of Ventura, was designed and constructed by nonprofessionals.
