Cornerstone of old County Courthouse being opened, Los Angeles, 1936

Description:
One of the cornerstones of the old County Courthouse, which was located on the corner of Temple and Broadway, was opened to reveal a box from 1888 when the foundation was laid. Among the contents was an eight-page issue of the Los Angeles Times. The ceremony was led by Marshall Stimson, president of the Historical Society of Southern California, and Joseph Mesmer, president of the Pioneer Society.

Description:
Roads passing through Griffith Park are viewed from a slightly elevated perspective. One road enters frame along the right half of the bottom edge and stretches into the near distance where it intersects another road at the base of a hillside. The other road enters frame from the lower right and slopes downward to the left. In the near distance and at the intersection, several fire fighters walk towards the camera. A truck is parked behind them, left-of-center. A hillside stretches across the background and along the far edge of the horizontally-oriented road. Halfway up the hill, flames rise and a burn line is visible. Dark smoke billows upward from the flames, obscuring the rest of the hill.

Dr. William Freile and Ross Alexander in court, Los Angeles, 1935

Description:
The late Mrs. Alexander was frustrated over several failed screen tests she had taken, which provoked a fight with her husband that culminated in two self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head. She died the following day at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. Alexander's business manager Vernon D. Wood called to deliver the message to Mrs. Alexander's father.

Frank Cunningham, prospector, Los Angeles, 1936

Description:
Name on negative sleeve and negative may be incorrect? "Frank L. Cunningham" of Los Angeles was very involved in the Lions club and local work, whereas this Frank Cunningham is a traveler and was only in Los Angeles to pick up a tool. A middle initial was not mentioned at all in article; he was just called "Col. Frank Cunningham."

Description:
Another photograph of Atanas Katchmakoff, with this sculpture, with his attorney Saul Ruskin, and art expert Dr. Ernest L. Tross appears in a Los Angeles Times article on 4/17/1935 titled: "Worth of Statue Debated: Value of Lost Madonna Estimated in Cost Case." At this time Katchmakoff sued Fred Keeler, the owner of the foundry that cast his Madonna sculpture for losing the plaster original. Two bronze sculptures had been made, but the owner of the bronze Madonnas had refused to allow his bronzes to be used to produce a new plaster cast.

Description:
Commission member, Thomas Perry, stands between fellow commissioners William G. Hale and Thomas C. Ridgway, who are both seated at a table strewn with documents. The California Code Commission, tasked with revising and codifying laws from thousands of specific state statutes, met to outline its objectives. Members were chosen from the legal and academic community. Commissioners included: President Thomas Caldwell Ridgway, former president of the California bar association; Vice-chairs, USC Dean William Green Hale and Perry Evans of San Francisco; Secretary Fred B. Wood; Don G. Bowker of Los Angeles; Gerald Hanna Hagar of Oakland; Berkeley's Professor Alexander Marsden Kidd; Stanford's Professor William B. Owens, and Norris N. Montgomery of Santa Barbara. Hagar and Kidd's names are misspelled in the Los Angeles Times caption and nitrate negative captions.
