He began as a file clerk in Omaha and worked his way up to "the boss of passenger business at the Los Angeles end of the line." Devil's Lake and the Devil's Gate Dam, La Cañada Flintridge

Description:
The Devil's Gate Dam was the first flood control dam constructed in Los Angeles County. Designed by the flood engineers from the Los Angeles County Flood Control District and completed in 1920 Bent Brothers company, it formed the Hahamongna flood basin. The dam is located in La Cañada Flintridge at Devil's Gorge, the narrowest point on the Arroyo Seco. The Arroyo Seco is a seasonal river and watershed that begins at Red Box Saddle near Mount Wilson in the San Gabriel Mountains and ends at the confluence with the Los Angeles River near Elysian Park, north of Downtown Los Angeles.

Gordon Stewart Northcott with man on his chicken ranch, Riverside, 1928-1930

Description:
Gordon Stewart Northcott walking with man, likely on his chicken coop ranch, Riverside, California. Northcott was accused of kidnapping, molesting, torturing, and brutally murdering three young boys and aiding in the murder of another in 1928, which his mother admitted to. She received a life sentence in jail. Northcott was found guilty on all accounts and was executed by hanging on October 2, 1930 at the age of 23.

Former Julian Petroleum secretary Leontine Johnson and attorney William B. Beirne exit a courtroom, Los Angeles, 1928-1932

Description:
Leontine Johnson (right) was a former confidential secretary of one of the heads of Julian Petroleum, S. C. Lewis. She and newspaper reporter Morris Lavine were tried and found guilty of an extortion scheme wherein Lavine accepted a sum from politician Charles Crawford to keep certain "secrets" quiet. These alleged "secrets" were contained in documentation regarding the manipulations of stocks and sales of the Julian Petroleum Corporation. These events are reported in multiple articles, including "Two in Expose 'Plot' Indicted: Extortion Charged Reporter and ex-Lewis Aide," Los Angeles Times, 14 Mar. 1930. Johnson and Lavine's trial ran from 1928-1932.

William Mulholland and 4 other men on the east bank of the St. Francis Reservoir, San Francisquito Canyon, circa 1926-1928

Description:
The St. Francis Dam was a 200-foot high concrete gravity-arch dam built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon (near present-day Castaic and Santa Clarita). The dam collapsed on March 12, 1928 at two and a half minutes before midnight. The resulting flood killed more than 600 residents plus an unknown number of itinerant farm workers camped in San Francisquito Canyon, making it the 2nd greatest loss of life in California after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is considered the worst American civil engineering failure in the 20th century.

Description:
Two telephone operators in the Santa Clara River Valley, at a switchboard. During the first critical hours after the start of the flood which followed the failure of the Saint Francis Dam, several telephone operators in communities in the path of the flood remained at their posts and transmitted warnings to the operators in communities down the line. The flood took 5 hours to reach the coast, just south of Ventura, at which point it was 2 miles wide.
