Marvin Hayes, 1944-1954

Description:
Marvin Hayes was an African American bass-baritone who performed in many styles of music from the Baroque to modern periods. He appeared as a soloist and as a chamber musician throughout the USA and Europe and he performed with major symphony orchestras. He lived his later years in Pacific Palisades and taught voice. He served on the faculty of Cal Arts from 1965 to 1979 and was a member of the Pomona College faculty from 1981 to 1995.

Margaret Leeper, who may be related to an account of the 1853 Butler Train to Oregon, circa 1871, photograph copied in 1939

Description:
George Miller West travelled with the Butler (wagon) Train, (organized by the Butler family, members of the Disciples of Christ Church) from Monmouth, Illinois to Polk County, Oregon in 1853. West made the journey to mine in Oregon and California. He wrote a memoir relating incidents of crossing the plains to Oregon and his experiences in the goldfields of southern Oregon and northern California. The memoir was prepared in the form of a 49-page typescript by his son, H. H. West, who distributed the memoir to several libraries and archives, along with copied photographs of members of the Butler Train and one or two mining associates. The photographs were collected by H. H. West from about 1935 to 1942. The name "Leeper" is mentioned in the memoir.

Description:
This photograph was most probably taken in 1895, when William Sachtleben was in Turkey to investigate the disappearance of cyclist Frank Lenz who had last been seen near Erzurum. Notes accompanying negatives indicate that during this trip, Sachtleben was in Bursa and travelled from Trabzon to Erzurum. Sachtleben's 1891 photographs of his bicycle tour across Asia have a circular format.

Description:
Portrait photograph of Manon Von Brieson. Von Brieson survived a September 8, 1935 car accident on the Roosevelt Highway in which film choreographer Busby Berkeley was at fault. Von Brieson's husband William Von Brieson, sister Dorothea "Peggy" Daley, and mother-in-law Ada Von Brieson died as a result of the accident, and Berkeley went on trial for second-degree murder for their deaths in December 1935.

Description:
Madame Sul-Te-Wan (born Nellie Crawford) was an African American stage, film and television actress. She was a character actress, most often appearing in "Mammy" roles.” She departed from this type casting when she appeared in the African-American cast musical drama, Carmen Jones, as Dorothy Dandridge's grandmother (1954).

Madame Sul-Te-Wan, 1939

Description:
After his retirement from the military in 1906, he founded the town of Allensworth in 1908, with the idea that African Americans could own property, learn, thrive, and live the American Dream. It was named by Lt. Colonel Allen Allensworth. It had a school system by 1910. With the death of Colonel Allensworth in 1914, the town experienced extreme losses, coupled with severe drought and decreased crop yields. Many residents left the area following World War I. The town was memorialized as a state park in 1974, and hosts events annually to preserve its history.

Lucy Agnes Taylor Johnson, grandmother of Ralph Bunche, 1890s (?)

Description:
Ralph Johnson Bunche was an American political scientist, academic, and diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Israel. He was the first African American to be so honored in the history of the prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. In 1963, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy. [Wikipedia]. After Ralph's mother died, his grandmother, Lucy Johnson, raised Ralph and his two sisters, taking them to Los Angeles.

Lucille Collins is to appear in the preliminary hearing of Charles B. Lynch, 35-year-old studio sculptor who stabbed her friend Al Spencer in a hotel lobby on Melrose Avenue last July 21. Night clerk Jack Lannon testified that he had to bite Lynch to make him drop the knife after stabbing Spencer in the back due to an altercation.
