Madame Sul-Te-Wan (born Nellie Crawford) was an African American stage, film and television actress. She was a character actress, most often appearing in "Mammy" roles.” She departed from this type casting when she appeared in the African-American cast musical drama, Carmen Jones, as Dorothy Dandridge's grandmother (1954).
