Description:
Kidnapping victim William F. Gettle's four children Bobby, Betty, Jimmy, and Billy pose for a photograph after their father's safe return home. Circa May 15, 1934.William F. Gettle, Beverly Hills millionaire, was kidnapped from the grounds of his Arcadia ranch home during a housewarming party on the eve of May 9th. The kidnapping attracted a great deal of attention in the community, with Mrs. Gettle even addressing the kidnappers through the pages of the Los Angeles Times. The kidnappers demanded a $60,000 ransom for the return of Gettle, which Mrs. Gettle agreed to pay. However, before the ransom was paid, two detectives of the LAPD, Chester Burris and H.P. Gearhardt, broke the case after installing a dictaphone in the home of a bank robbery suspect. Information from the dictaphone led them to a La Crescenta home where Gettle was held. He was returned, unharmed, to his family on the eve of May 14th.

Los Angeles County's prize-winning Belgian draft horses are sold at auction. April 18, 1934.

Description:
Five of the twenty-six Belgian draft horses being auctioned off by Los Angeles County at Los Angeles's Union Stock Yards. L.A. County's Board of Supervisors had assessed that the draft horses, though they had won many prizes and obtained national recognition, were too expensive to continue to care for. The twenty-six horses netted $11,367.50 at auction.

In the front row of the photo are City Councilman Howard Davis, Auxillary members Marie Gore, and Mary Repp. Behind them are Auxillary members Julia Van Sky and Mrs. Tom Rice.Members of the Los Angeles American Legion Auxillary hold bouquets of artificial poppies, made by veterans of the First World War. The poppies were sold by members of the American Legion Auxillary in order to raise money for disabled veterans and their families.Poppies were chosen as representative of Memorial Day due to their presence in the iconic World War I memorial poem, "In Flanders Fields". The poem was written by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

"Little America" float in the Toutnament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1934

Description:
The first base was established in 1929, while the last, Little America V, was established in 1956 at Kainan Bay. Little America II was established in 1934, and during the 1934-1935 expedition, many souvenir letters were sent from Little America, using a commemorative postage stamp issued by the U.S. government. Glendale's float received a special award, a consolation prize after the float's entry having been delayed en route to the parade.

Dr. Thomson had given a keynote address titled "Biology and Human Life" the day before. Known formally as the "Dedication of the New Campus and New Buildings of the University of California at Los Angeles", the event brought together regents, professors, students, alumni, and representatives of other educational institutions for four sessions held on March 27 and 28. The woman wears a light-colored dress with ruffles and a lace mantilla over a high comb. The men wear dark, close-fitting embroidered suits with short jackets and hats with ribbon bands. The couple may be the bride and groom who were married during the fiesta that year as described in a 8/19/1932 Los Angeles Times article titled "Historic Pageant Opens Santa Barbara Fiesta..." stating "The bridal pair on horseback were escorted by many riders by caballero and senorita, while a creaking careta carried members of the family of both bride and groom."
