Description:
Designed for a working class community in Los Angeles, the Tower Theater is a modest design which presents a stylish black and white Deco exterior (62701). The night view shows the effective use of neon and spotlighting to illuminate the fluted Moderne tower (62702). The box office is surrounded by circles of light bulbs on the lobby ceiling and a sunburst design on the lobbyýs terrazzo floor (62703). Poster cases are framed by scrolled pediments and simulated columns. The interior uses exaggerated columns, mirrors, white traditional-style furniture, and gilt to suggest a palatial elegance that is distant from the lives of the theatreýs clientele (62704-62705). Hanging lanterns and striped upholstery in the auditorium impart a subdued elegance (62706-62707).

Description:
Famous and influential motion picture producer and co-founder of Paramount Pictures, Jesse L. Lasky, photographed with an older woman, possibly his mother Sarah.Jesse Louis Lasky was born in San Francisco, California in 1880. He began a career as a vaudeville performer in his 20s, which led him to business in Hollywood. In 1913, he founded the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company, with his sister's husband Samuel Goldwyn and close friend Cecil B. DeMille. This company later joined with Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Film Company to release films as Paramount Pictures.

Crowd watching a baseball game at Wrigley Field in South Los Angeles. Los Angeles's Wrigley Field was built in 1925 and torn down in 1966. It was host to minor league baseball teams and home of the Los Angeles Angeles. The field is named after the same Wrigley as Wrigley Field in Chicago, but it actually received the name first and had more on-site parking than Chicago's field does now.

UCLA members of the "Veterans of Future Wars," a satirical college group begun at Princeton. April 7, 1936.

Description:
Members UCLA's "post" of the "Veterans of Future Wars," dressed in World War I-era military uniforms, mug for the camera.The "Veterans of Future Wars" was a satirical organization begun by students at Princeton University. The group formed after the "Bonus Army" of World War I veterans, many of whom had become unemployed since the beginning of the Great Depression, successfully lobbied Congress to pay them the full value of their military bonuses, the sum total of which was $3.6 billion dollars, to be paid out in 1945. The Veterans of Future Wars claimed that they were likely to fight and perhaps die in the wars the United States would fight over the next 30 years, and as such should be paid their military bonuses while they were still alive to spend them. The organization became quite popular on college campuses in 1936, attracting conservative students who opposed the fiscal policies of FDR's administration, and leftist and pacifist students who saw the organization as a statement against war itself. By June of 1936, the group boasted 50,000 students on 584 campuses. The organization disbanded in April of 1937.Ironically, many of the students who belonged to the Veterans of Future Wars would serve in World War II, including all but one of its founding members at Princeton.

Paul Mantz, motion picture stunt pilot and consultant, poses with airplane. Circa February 1936.

Description:
Stunt pilot and entrepreneur Paul Mantz poses with one of his airplanes. Mantz received his pilot's license in 1926 while serving with the Army Air Services, after which he pursued a career as a motion pictures stunt pilot, air racing pilot, film aviation consultant, and manager of "United Air Services" and "Paul Mantz Air Services," which contracted pilots and airplanes for the film industry. Paul Mantz also taught pilots, including notable student Amelia Earhart, whom he accompanied on her first (unsuccessful) attempt at flying around the globe.This photograph was likely taken during Mantz's divorce trial from his first wife, Myrtle L. Mantz (nee Harvey), a fellow aviator and former student. They were married in 1932 and divorced in 1936. A "Mrs. Putnam" was named during the divorce hearing, a likely reference to Earhart, who was married to George Palmer Putnam, publisher.

Taken at grand jury investigation into death of film actress Thelma Todd. Todd was found in the garage of film director West, her business partner and lover, dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. Schafer was the manager of a roadside cafe owned by West and Todd. Whitehead was Todd’s personal maid. Todd's death was eventually ruled an accident.

Dorothy Libaire, theater and film actress of the 1930s, receives a writ of divorce from her husband, director Marion Gering. April 9, 1936.

Description:
Theater and film actress Dorothy Libaire, photographed at the Los Angeles Superior courthouse upon the occassion of her divorce from husband, Russion film and theater director Marion Gering. According to Libaire, her husband believed that people involved in theater should not be married. The two were married on November 28, 1930. Gering directed Libaire in the 1932 film "Madame Butterfly," starring Sylvia Sidney and Cary Grant. Libaire played the part of "Peach Blossom." They separated on January 22, 1936.

Newspaper clipping from the N. Y. Evening Graphic featuring a picture of Mata Hari, a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan who was accused of being a spy for Germany during World War I. Because of this charge, she was executed in France on October 15, 1917. Review of official case documents in 1985 revealed that Mata Hari was most likely innocent. Mata Hari was the stage name for Margaretha Geertruida "Grietje" Zelle

Portrait of aviator Myrtle L. Mantz, nee Harvey, likely taken during her divorce from film stunt pilot and consultant Paul Mantz. Mrs. Mantz was a former flight student of her husband's. They were married in 1932. Their divorce hearing attracted public attention when a "Mrs. Putnam" was named during the divorce hearing, a likely reference to Amelia Earhart, who was married to George Palmer Putnam, publisher. Both Earhart and her husband were friends of Myrtle and Paul Mantz, and Earhart was tutored by Paul Mantz on long distance aviation and navigation. The Mantzes were granted a divorce on June 28, 1936.

A Grecian-themed float including columns and costumed participants created for the Hoover Dam Power Inaugural. The celebration was held to honor the first instances of power-production from the dam. Downtown Los Angeles was flooded with 7.2 million candle-power light, and engineers claimed that the display was visible from 100 miles away.
