Mae West (August 17, 1893–November 22, 1980) sitting in court during questioning about profits earned from her role in the movie "She Done Him Wrong." Writer Mark Linden accused West of failing to provide half of the profits she earned from selling his play to Paramount in order to produce the film. The judge ruled that West did not owe the writer any of the additional money she received as salary for her role as an actress. West was an American actress, playwright, and screenwriter.

Attorney Ross F. Wilkins apologizing to Deputy Sheriff J. A. Dixon for engaging him in a fist fight during a jury selection session for the William Bonelli liquor license bribe trial. The fight started when Dixon told Wilkins he could not ride down in the elevator with the newly selected jury. Wilkins resisted and started punching Dixon when Dixon went to physically remove Wilkins from the elevator. Wilkins, who was uninvolved with the trial, claimed that he resisted because Dixon was in plain clothes and he didn't realize that he was an officer. Wilkins and Dixon appeared friendly during the apology.

Shirley Smith, 14, and her brother Donald Smith, 11, were "abandoned" after their mother, Betty Alice Phillips, and father, Melvin D. Smith, both declared that they were unable to care for the children. The father, Mr. Smith, stated that he was re-married and had three children from his second wife. He asked to be relieved of custody because the two sets of children did not get along. Mrs. Phillips asked to be relieved of custody because she was in the process of divorcing her second husband and did not have a home to provide the children. Ultimately, Mrs. Phillips secured a home from her estranged husband and agreed to keep custody of the children. Superior Judge Fred Miller awarded custody to Mrs. Phillips.

She is accused of performing immoral acts with her husband, Reverend Joseph Jeffers, in front of guests in their home. Mrs. Jeffers claimed that on the night of her arrest she was drugged by neighbor Vincent Higgins, a District Attorney’s detective, and didn’t remember the events that were supposed to have taken place. A film reviewed by the prosecution showed Reverend and Mrs. Jeffers disrobing in front of their guests. Behind Mrs. Jeffers is a floor plan of her home, which she described for the jury.

Louis R. Glavis, director of investigation for the Department of the Interior, as well as for the Civil Works Administration and Publiv Works Administration, is photographed in the office of U.S. Attorney Peirson Hall. Glavis's visit to Los Angeles coincided with increasing indictments relating to accusations that various major oil corporations had violated the National Petroleum Administration's code of fair competition. The government contended, via the offices of Attorney Peirson Hall, that major oil companies such as Shell and Standard oil had planned to create price-cutting wars, cut wages and reduce employment.

Description:
Noted evangelist and founder of the Angelus Temple and the Foursquare Church, Aimee Semple McPherson, appears in court. This appearance is possibly related to her testifying in her own defense in a breach of contract suit regarding a film, "Clay in the Potter's Hands", in which she was to appear. The film's producer, J. Roy Stewart, died before the trial was completed, but the suit was found in his favor and McPherson ordered to pay $5900 to assignees of his interest in the contract. The trial took place in January of 1934.

Williams was granted the divorce in Superior Judge Edmond's court, and attributed it to the date of Friday the 13th, her "lucky number", contrary to popular convention.

Description:
Dr. George K. Dazey (left) with his attorney, Jerry Giesler, at the trial in which Dr. Dazey is accused of murdering his second wife, actress Doris S. Dazey, in 1935. Doris Dazey's death was originally believed to be suicide by monoxide poisoning. However, witnesses claimed that Dr. Dazey had been boasting about committing the "perfect crime" and a night watchman testified to witnessing Dazey carry a woman's body from the house to the garage on the night of the murder. Other factors complicating the trial were the paternity of Doris and George Dazey's child, Doris Dazey's possible mental illness, and false testimonies from some of the witnesses. Dr. Dazey was ultimately acquitted of the crime.

Thomas W. Warner Jr. testifies in his suit against Pearl Antibus, Los Angeles, 1938

Description:
Thomas W. Warner Jr., son of millionaire automobile parts manufacturing magnate Thomas W. Warner Sr., pictured on the stand. Warner Jr. had brought a suit against Pearl Antibus, a private investigator, whom he had hired to determine if his fiancee, Jean MacDonald, loved him for himself or was only interested in his fortune. Antibus investigated by placing a dictaphone in MacDonald's home. The sum total of her services came to $2500, $1500 of which was still owed to her. Warner disputed the amount, which he asserted he had never agreed to, and thus brought suit against Antibus. Superior Judge Stutsman ruled on April 14 that, as Antibus had successfully completed her services and determined that Warner's fiancee did love him, she thus was owed the full amount. He further opined that, after viewing Jean MacDonald on the stand, that "she is well worth that $1500 and more."

Mrs. Glab had been only recently convicted of forging the will of her late fiancee, wealthy manufacturer Albert Cheney, who died in Las Vegas before the two could be wed. John I. Glab was shot in the home he and Hazel Glab shared, on the evening of June 18, 1928. Mrs. Glab contested that her husband had been shot by her former lover, policeman W. R. McIntyre, and that she had been home listening to the radio with her niece the eve of the murder and had not heard the shot. Glab had been married to the pharmacist for only 16 months.Hazel Glab was convicted of second-degree murder on March 21, 1936.

Description:
Thomas W. Warner Jr., son of millionaire automobile parts manufacturing magnate Thomas W. Warner Sr., pictured on the stand. Warner Jr. had brought a suit against Pearl Antibus, a private investigator, whom he had hired to determine if his fiancee, Jean MacDonald, loved him for himself or was only interested in his fortune. Antibus investigated by placing a dictaphone in MacDonald's home. The sum total of her services came to $2500, $1500 of which was still owed to her. Warner disputed the amount, which he asserted he had never agreed to, and thus brought suit against Antibus. Superior Judge Stutsman ruled on April 14 that, as Antibus had successfully completed her services and determined that Warner's fiancee did love him, she thus was owed the full amount. He further opined that, after viewing Jean MacDonald on the stand, that "she is well worth that $1500 and more."
