Description

Workers' checking accounts, with occasional indications of specific professions, some of which are rather peculiar for rural employment. The specific mentioned professions are: ploughman, train station master, seaman, operator of water scoop (“moinjollo [monjolo?]”), and guard (“vigia)”; other professions are mentioned to identify individuals who had only their first name registered (perhaps ex-enslaved people): harvestman, colonist, cook, stoker, mason, and bricklayer’s mate. Period: from October 1890 to January 1895.
Contas correntes dos trabalhadores, com eventuais indicações de profissões específicas, algumas delas bastante peculiares para o emprego rural. As profissões específicas mencionadas são: arador, chefe [d]a Estação, marinheiro, “moinjollo” (monjolo?) e vigia; outras profissões são mencionadas para identificar indivíduos registrados apenas com o primeiro nome (talvez ex-escravizados): colhedor, colono, cozinheiro, foguista, pedreiro e servente. Período: de outubro de 1890 a janeiro de 1895.

(1) Incomplete ledger: pages 59-76, 81-82, and 91-92 are missing in the original; the back cover is also missing, but the typographical numbering of pages ends on page 995, thus suggesting that the ledger does contain its last sheet. (2) There is the current account of a laborer registered on the last, non-numbered, page. (3) The sheet corresponding to pages 17-18 has its lower corner torn in the original. (4) The ledger has two entries referring to the farm’s administration: “A Sociedade” (page 700) refers to the farm’s medical cooperative as of March 1892 (possibly its first entry in the ledgers); “Levy & Comp.a” heads page 887. (5) A small calendar sheet (February 10, without year) was folded and used as bookmark for pages 780-781, both starting on May 1892.
