Rex Ingram, 1936

Description:
Rex Ingram graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in medicine before launching a brilliant acting career which spanned 50 years. Ingram also appeared on the Broadway stage and in television productions, bringing skill and dignity to every performance. He is probably best remembered for his portrayal of Jim, the fugitive slave, opposite Mickey Rooney in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1939). He later opened the Club Alabam in the Dunbar Hotel on Central Avenue in Los Angeles, California.

Bessie Bruington Burke, 1918-1938

Description:
Bessie Bruington Burke is recognized as the first black principal of a Los Angeles public school. She attended Los Angeles State Normal School (now part of UCLA) and earned her teaching credential in 1911. Her education was paid for by the Los Angeles Forum, a political and civic organization founded by African Americans in the early 20th century.

Description:
Born on the island of St. Croix in the Danish West Indies in 1810, William Leidesdorff was the son of Danish sugar planter Alexander Leidesdorff and Anna Marie Sparks, a light-skinned woman of mixed race ancestry. In 1841 Leidesdorff settled in the Mexican village of Yerba Buena on San Francisco Bay. Over the next three years he became a successful merchant by making frequent trips between California, Mexico and Hawaii. In 1844 governor Micheltorena confirmed his land grant of 35,000 acres on the American River. Ranch Rio de Los Americanos was located near the spot where James Marshall discovered gold in January 1848. When Leidesdorff died unexpectedly in May 1848 he was buried inside Mission Dolores Church. Leidesdorff was a social, economic and political force in pre-gold rush San Francisco. When he was named the U.S. Vice Consul to Mexico in 1845, he became the nation’s first African American diplomat. He was elected to San Francisco’s first city council and its first school board in 1847. He built the first hotel, the first shipping warehouse, he operated the first steamboat on San Francisco Bay, and he laid out the first horse race track in California

Drs. John and Vada Somerville standing beside a car, 1930s

Description:
Dr. John Somerville, born in Jamaica, was the first black graduate of USC School of Dentistry (1907). He married Vada Jetmore Watson (1912), who also became a dentist. He built the Somerville Hotel (1928), was instrumental in the founding of the Los Angeles chapter of NAACP (1914), and served on the Police Commission 1949-1953.

Dunbar Hotel (formerly Hotel Somerville), Los Angeles, 1930s

Description:
Dr. Vada Somerville (born Vada Jetmore Watson) of Pomona graduated from USC, married dentist John Alexander Somerville (1912), was the first African American woman and the second African American person to graduate from USC School of Dentistry (1918), and was the first African American woman certified to practice dentistry in the state of California. She was a civil rights activist, highly involved in several civic and community organizations.

Congregation of the Hamilton Methodist Episcopal Church, Los Angeles, 1930-1960

Description:
The Hamilton M. E. Church of Los Angeles was formed in 1904. It was originally named the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church and changed the name in 1952 to the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Historically, the church denomination was a trailblazer in their support of women’s professional development and leadership roles in organizing church missions and in the ministry. The church has its roots in evangelicalism, and has maintained that connection throughout its history.

Old Watts Library, Los Angeles, 1913-1957

Description:
Watts was a small working man's city without a library at the time of its application for Carnegie funding. A grant of $10,000 was received in 1913 and the building was completed in 1914. The architect Elmore Jeffery designed the building in the Classical Revival style. The builder was H.E. La Rue. With little tax base, Watts had trouble providing utilities and services, including library service, and became the only Los Angeles County municipality to join the county library system before 1917. In 1926, seeking relief from the postwar depression and unemployment, and needing a larger base, Watts sought annexation to Los Angeles. The Watts Library then became a branch of the Los Angeles Public Library. In 1957, voters approved a Branch Library Bond Issue, and funding was made available for the construction of a new facility. Roland Hayes, 1920s-1930s

Description:
Roland Hayes was an American lyric tenor and composer. In 1915 Hayes premiered in New York City in concerts presented by the orchestra leader Walter F. Craig. Hayes performed his own musical arrangements in recitals from 1916 to 1919, touring from coast to coast. He recorded with Columbia in 1939. Hayes continued to perform until the age of 85.

Description:
James Beckwourth, of mixed-race, and was born into slavery in Virginia. His father was the plantation master, and his mother was an enslaved African American. Beckwourth became a trapper and explorer in California, where he lived with the Crow Nation for several years and married Crow women. He guided migrants to California and discovered the “Beckwourth Pass” through the mountains between Reno, Nevada and Portola, California.

Jose Cesario Moreno and his wife Maria Guadalupe Gertrudis Perez were from Real del Rosario, Sinaloa. They were among 12 families from Rosario recruited in 1781 to settle in Los Angeles. Moreno served as a Los Angeles Regidor; he is buried at Mission San Gabriel.

Nolie and Lela Murray, owners of Murray's Dude Ranch, Victorville, between 1930-1949

Description:
Nolie and Lela Murray opened Murray's Dude Ranch in 1922 and ran the ranch as a home for troubled youths, including African Americans into the mid 1930s. In financial difficulties of the Great Depression, they converted the property into a vacation Dude Ranch for African Americans. A publicized visit by Joe Louis in 1937 brought them clients and the ranch was popular and busy into the 1950s. Pearly Bailey purchased the ranch in 1955 and lived there with her family, when she was not performing, for nine years. Lela was a member of the Victorville Chamber of Commerce, and she loaned the ranch out for charitable causes.
