Beckwourth Pass was discovered by James P. Beckwourth in 1850. Beckwourth developed Beckwourth Trail, traversing the pass, that was used by immigrants during the Gold Rush from 1851 to 1855. After that, the railroad came into use.

Description:
Charlie Nelson Gibson was born in Sacramento. His family moved to Oakland in the late 19th century. He was a redcap for the Southern Pacific Railroad from 1913-1954. He and his wife, Maude, had three daughters, Thelma, Lois, and Audrey. Gibson was a member of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Oakland, the Retired Railroad Men's Club, and several masonic lodges.

Description:
Elmer Bartlett was a highly acclaimed choir director and organist. Churches where he worked in include the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles. He received several awards in the course of his career including first prize for directing the Los Angeles AME's choir at a 1926 choir competition at the Hollywood Bowl. By 1940 he had moved to Elgin Illinois. He continued to direct choirs and play the organ for various A.M.E. churches.

Description:
Juan Francisco Reyes, was a mulatto settler from Mexico who arrived shortly after the original settlers of 1781. In 1784, he received the Spanish Crown’s land-grant for Rancho Los Encinos. After selling it back, he received the land grant for Lompoc. He became the first alcalde (mayor) of the Los Angeles pueblo in 1790.

Cynthiabelle Gordon Smith was born Cynthiabelle Black in Americus, Georgia. Her father was Alfred Black and her brother was Junior G. Black. She married the dentist, Dr. Isadore C. Mitchell (April 30, 1925). Shortly after, he completed dental school at Howard University and then moved to Los Angeles. In 1934, she moved to Washington, D.C. seeking work, and divorced Mitchell in 1936. In 1937 she was working for the U. S. Public Health Service in Washington, D. C. She married the physician Dr. Wilbur Gordon (possibly in 1942) and was widowed. She married Dr. R. Stillman Smith in 1947.

The Hamilton M. E. Church of Los Angeles was formed in 1904. It was originally named the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church and changed the name in 1952 to the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Historically, the church denomination was a trailblazer in their support of women’s professional development and leadership roles in organizing church missions and in the ministry. The church has its roots in evangelicalism, and has maintained that connection throughout its history.

Captain William Shorey, circa 1900

Description:
William T. Shorey was a late 19th-century American whaling ship captain. He was born in Barbados July 13, 1859 and spent his life at sea. He became the only black captain operating on the west coast of the United States in the late-1880s and 1890s. He obtained his certification in 1885. His whaling voyages were based out of San Francisco. The John and Winthrop was the only whaling ship in the world to be manned entirely by an African-American crew. Shorey retired from whaling in 1908 (Wikipedia). A street in west Oakland, where Shorey lived, is named after him.

Old Watts Library, Los Angeles, 1913-1957

Description:
Watts was a small working man's city without a library at the time of its application for Carnegie funding. A grant of $10,000 was received in 1913 and the building was completed in 1914. The architect Elmore Jeffery designed the building in the Classical Revival style. The builder was H.E. La Rue. With little tax base, Watts had trouble providing utilities and services, including library service, and became the only Los Angeles County municipality to join the county library system before 1917. In 1926, seeking relief from the postwar depression and unemployment, and needing a larger base, Watts sought annexation to Los Angeles. The Watts Library then became a branch of the Los Angeles Public Library. In 1957, voters approved a Branch Library Bond Issue, and funding was made available for the construction of a new facility. Description:
Born on the island of St. Croix in the Danish West Indies in 1810, William Leidesdorff was the son of Danish sugar planter Alexander Leidesdorff and Anna Marie Sparks, a light-skinned woman of mixed race ancestry. In 1841 Leidesdorff settled in the Mexican village of Yerba Buena on San Francisco Bay. Over the next three years he became a successful merchant by making frequent trips between California, Mexico and Hawaii. In 1844 governor Micheltorena confirmed his land grant of 35,000 acres on the American River. Ranch Rio de Los Americanos was located near the spot where James Marshall discovered gold in January 1848. When Leidesdorff died unexpectedly in May 1848 he was buried inside Mission Dolores Church. Leidesdorff was a social, economic and political force in pre-gold rush San Francisco. When he was named the U.S. Vice Consul to Mexico in 1845, he became the nation’s first African American diplomat. He was elected to San Francisco’s first city council and its first school board in 1847. He built the first hotel, the first shipping warehouse, he operated the first steamboat on San Francisco Bay, and he laid out the first horse race track in California

James Homer Garrott, was an African-American architect active in the Los Angeles area in the mid-20th century who designed more than 200 buildings. He has been described as a "pivotal black Avant garde modernist of the 1940s era. He earned his architect's license (1928), studied Architecture at the University of Southern California (1930-1934) and was the second African-American admitted to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in Los Angeles (1946).

Dr. John Somerville, born in Jamaica, was the first black graduate of USC School of Dentistry (1907). He married Vada Jetmore Watson (1912), who also became a dentist. He built the Somerville Hotel (1928), was instrumental in the founding of the Los Angeles chapter of NAACP (1914), and served on the Police Commission 1949-1953.

Bowdoin family, Los Angeles, circa 1940

Description:
Lorenzo Bowdoin was a Los Angeles businessman, civic leader, philanthropist and NAACP leader. One of the first three black clerks hired by the Los Angeles Post Office in 1906, he worked there for 38 years and improved hiring and promotion policies for blacks. He was one of the organizers of Angelus Mortuary (1925) and was the treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Haitian Coffee Co. He was active in many civic organizations including the Metropolitan YMCA.

Negro Bar, was a large gravel bar on the south side the American River named for the African-American gold miners who discovered gold there during the 1849 California Gold Rush. For a few years, it rewarded the prospectors with a steady yield of coarse gold dust. Now part of Negro Bar State Recreation Area.

Dr. Vada Somerville (born Vada Jetmore Watson) of Pomona graduated from USC, married dentist John Alexander Somerville (1912), was the first African American woman and the second African American person to graduate from USC School of Dentistry (1918), and was the first African American woman certified to practice dentistry in the state of California. She was a civil rights activist, highly involved in several civic and community organizations.

A group of African American men standing in front of the newly opened Magnolia Saloon, owned by Robert Stewart, located on the corner of New High and Marchessault Street in “Sonoratown”. All of the buildings lining the street are adobe or wood. A wagon is parked across New High Street near a laundry. Two large trees shade that side of the street near a picket fence. The J.W. Robinson Mansion is visible on the left overlooking Castelar and Bellevue (Sunset Boulevard).

Roland Hayes, 1920s-1930s

Description:
Roland Hayes was an American lyric tenor and composer. In 1915 Hayes premiered in New York City in concerts presented by the orchestra leader Walter F. Craig. Hayes performed his own musical arrangements in recitals from 1916 to 1919, touring from coast to coast. He recorded with Columbia in 1939. Hayes continued to perform until the age of 85.

Description:
Dr. Opal C. Jones (1919 or 20-1998) was a welfare activist in Los Angeles. In the 1950s, she was associate director of the UCLA campus YMCA, and a social worker at the Avalon-Carver Community Center, providing service resources to low-income residents in south central L.A. In 1965, she was the founder and executive director of the Neighborhood Adult Participation Project (NAPP), one of the main programs administered by the main agency of the Los Angeles “War on Poverty.” At that time there were almost no African American women working as executive directors. In 1966, Jones sought to separate NAPP from the Economic and Youth Opportunities Agency (EYOA) so that it could be operated for the benefit of the community. Joe Maldonado, executive director of the EYOA, fired her. She succeeded in recovering her position and EYOA was reorganized and decentralized as a result of her efforts. Her distinguished career in public service earned her numerous awards, citations, resolutions and certificates from everybody from the president of the United States to the Los Angeles City Council, which named her Woman of the Year in 1960. Born in Tyler, Texas, she received her BA degree from Prairie View A&M University, her master of social work from the Atlanta University School of Social Work and her doctor of education from the University of San Francisco.
