Russian aviators meet the press after breaking the non-stop flight record, flying from Moscow to San Jacinto, CA. July 14, 1937.

Description:
Soviet aviators -- Col. Mikhail Gromov, pilot, Maj. Andrei Yumashev, co-pilot, and Capt. Sergei Danilin, navigator -- are welcomed after breaking the nonstop flight record, flying from Moscow and landing in San Jacinto, California, via the North Pole. The trio flew over 6700 miles in 62 hours and 12 minutes. The original flight plan called for a landing in San Diego, but fog made landing the Russians’ large monoplane on San Diego’s short runways dangerous, and so the crew landed instead in the semi-desert fields surrounding San Jacinto. After landing, the crew was quickly taken to the nearby March Field Air Base, where they answered questions from reporters after a shower and a quick meal. Description:
Ex-convict Peter Pianezzi (right) and his lawyer Nathan Freedman at one of two trials where Pianezzi is charged with the murders of gambler George (Les) Bruneman and Frank A. Greuzard. Allegedly, Pianezzi shot Bruneman 16 times in a cafe and then shot cafe employee Greuzard as he tried to take down the license plate of Pianezzi's car. The murder of Bruneman, which occurred on October 25, 1937, is thought to have been gang-related. The first trial ended with a hung jury, 9-3 for the acquittal of Pianezzi. In the second trial, Pianezzi received a life sentence for the murders. Later, at age 80, Pianezzi received a pardon based on innocence.

Dr. George K. Dazey on the witness stand at the trial where he is accused of the murder of his second wife, Doris S. Dazey, Los Angeles, 1939-1940

Description:
Dr. George K. Dazey on the witness stand at the trial in which he is accused of murdering his second wife, actress Doris S. Dazey, in 1935. Doris Dazey's death was originally believed to be suicide by monoxide poisoning. However, witnesses claimed that Dr. Dazey had been boasting about committing the "perfect crime" and a night watchman testified to witnessing Dazey carry a woman's body from the house to the garage on the night of the murder. Other factors complicating the trial were the paternity of Doris and George Dazey's child, Doris Dazey's possible mental illness, and false testimonies from some of the witnesses. Dr. Dazey was ultimately acquitted of the crime.

The jury found Wright guilty of two counts of manslaughter, and subsequently ruled that he had been insane at his sanity trial.

Prince Bhu Pinder pins Sandor Szabo against the ropes during a mud wrestling match at Olympic Auditorium. This type of wrestling was considered "Hindu style" and it has slightly different rules than regular wrestling, including prohibiting holds beneath the waist. During the match, the first three rows were roped off and the press and referees wore rubber wear to protect from mud splatter. Szabo eventually won the match in front of more than 8000 spectators

Hubert Castle (a.k.a. Hal Smith or Hal Silvers), wirewalker, prepares for his act at the Shrine Charity Circus. The circus is an annual 10-day event held at Shrine Auditorium, which features an indoor show by the Polack Bros. Circus. Orphaned and underprivileged children are allowed to visit the circus as their admission is paid by affluent members of the community. The circus also travels to the children's hospital to entertain the sick children who can't attend. Proceeds from the circus go to Shrine charitable activities.

In the car with Roosevelt was First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and then Mayor Frank L. Shaw. President Roosevelt gave a speech at the end of a motorcade through the city. The trip was Roosevelt’s first as President. Newspapers estimated the crowd at the Coliseum in the tens of thousands.
