Description:
Kidnapping victim William F. Gettle's four children Bobby, Betty, Jimmy, and Billy pose for a photograph after their father's safe return home. Circa May 15, 1934.William F. Gettle, Beverly Hills millionaire, was kidnapped from the grounds of his Arcadia ranch home during a housewarming party on the eve of May 9th. The kidnapping attracted a great deal of attention in the community, with Mrs. Gettle even addressing the kidnappers through the pages of the Los Angeles Times. The kidnappers demanded a $60,000 ransom for the return of Gettle, which Mrs. Gettle agreed to pay. However, before the ransom was paid, two detectives of the LAPD, Chester Burris and H.P. Gearhardt, broke the case after installing a dictaphone in the home of a bank robbery suspect. Information from the dictaphone led them to a La Crescenta home where Gettle was held. He was returned, unharmed, to his family on the eve of May 14th.

It was host to minor league baseball teams and home of the Los Angeles Angeles. The field is named after the same Wrigley as Wrigley Field in Chicago, but it actually received the name first and had more on-site parking than Chicago's field does now.

Los Angeles County's prize-winning Belgian draft horses are sold at auction. April 18, 1934.

Description:
Five of the twenty-six Belgian draft horses being auctioned off by Los Angeles County at Los Angeles's Union Stock Yards. L.A. County's Board of Supervisors had assessed that the draft horses, though they had won many prizes and obtained national recognition, were too expensive to continue to care for. The twenty-six horses netted $11,367.50 at auction.

Description:
Crowd outside the Goodwill Industries premises in the Baker Block building, where a fire occurred on January 14, 1938. Remarkably, 400 crippled and elderly men and women, as well as 20 children in the nursery, escaped the event unharmed. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading throught the entire building, which had been in use since 1868. A short circuit in the electrical department on the ground floor was suspected to be the cause of the fire. Photograph looks to have been taken pre-fire

Gettle was kidnapped from the grounds of from his Arcadia ranch house during a party on the eve of May 9th. The kidnapping attracted a great deal of attention in the community, with Mrs. Gettle even addressing the kidnappers through the pages of the Los Angeles Times. Young Los Angelino Yvonne Marion Wolff sits piled under produce grown in a local community garden.Beginning in 1933, small tracts of land throughout Los Angeles county were used by the government as locations for community gardens, where men left unemployed by the Great Depression could work and grow food to feed their families. In 1933, 890 acres of land in Los Angeles County were used toward this purpose; the program expanded to 2,500 acres of land in 1934. This land was approximately enough to grow the vegetables consumed by 20,000 county welfare families.

A photograph of Chief of Beverly Hills Police Charles C. Blair, District Attorney Buron Fitts, and lawyer Ernest E. Noon. The three men were involved in the search for kidnapping victim William F. Gettle and the prosecution of the kidnappers after Gettle's safe recovery.Charles C. Blair was the first Chief of Police of Beverly Hills, serving from 1927-1942. Ernest E. Noon was the attorney of the Gettle family. He was intimitely involved with the attempts to recover William F. Gettle, directing via the Los Angeles Times that the kidnappers send any ransom requests to him, as Mrs. Fleeta Gettle was ill with nervous prostration after the kidnapping of her husband and under medical supervision.Buron Fitts was the district attorney of Los Angeles from 1928-1940. Fitts was in charge of co-ordinating the police agencies in their search for Gettle and his kidnappers.

"Prince" Michael Romanoff, popular Hollywood pretender to Russian royal blood, Los Angeles, 1934 (?)

Description:
A photograph of "Prince" (not, as captioned here, "Grand Duke") Michael Romanoff, a Hollywood restaurateur and actor, who claimed to be a member of the Russian royal family. This claim was widely known to be false; however, Romanoff kept up the deception throughout his life in Los Angeles.Romanoff was born Hershel Geguzin in Lithuania. He traveled extensively before settling in Los Angeles and into the role of Michael Romanoff. In Hollywood, he acted on stage and in film, but was perhaps most successful as the owner of the restaurant "Romanoff's" in Beverly Hills. The restaurant was popular for its chocolate souffles, and was frequented by many celebrities. It closed its doors in 1962.
