Noble Swanson who was injured when a section of roof caved in during a fire at the Melody Lane Café on Wilshire Blvd. The fire began in the roof of the Melody Lane kitchen and high winds swept the blaze through neighboring businesses including the Pig’n Whistle candy and pastry shop, Randall Optometrist, McKiernan’s Fashions, Horton & Converse Pharmacy and Staber’s Beauty Salon. Noble suffered a back sprain, bruises and cuts. No one else was injured but total damage was estimated to exceed $200,000.

Elysian Park landslide, Los Angeles, November 1937

Description:
Landslide aftermath in Elysian Park. The landslide started near the top of Buena Vista Peak as a small crack in the earth. The crack began separating at a rate of about half an inch every 24 hours, then became a meandering zig-zag, and finally a landslide on November 26, 1937. During the landslide 1,500,000 tons of loose rock and dirt tumbled down the hill and onto a 600 foot stretch of Riverside Drive. The disaster caused rerouting of traffic and attracted thousands of spectators. Because the initial crack was identified early, damage and injuries were largely avoided

Doris's death was originally thought to be death by carbon monoxide poisoning, but after George Dazey started boasting to friends about committing the "perfect crime," suspicion turned toward him. Dazey was ultimately acquitted of the crime.

Mrs. Marsena Norton, sitting between two men, most likely her attorneys Lee J. Myers and Louis B. Minter. Photo was taken during a trial in which Mrs. Norton is seeking $25,000 in damages against Jimmie Walker for the death of her husband, John Thomas Norton. Mr. Walker was allegedly driving 105 miles an hour when he lost control of the car containing Mr. Norton and three others. Mr. Norton and one other passenger died in the crash, two others were seriously injured, Walker sustained minor injuries. The defense argued that all passengers had been drinking before the accident.

Photograph of cowboy motion picture extra John Ainsworth Tyacke a.k.a. Johnny Tyke, who was murdered by fellow extra Jerome "Blackjack" Ward in Gower Gulch, the name given to the area near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street where film extras hang out waiting for work. Allegedly, Blackjack shot Tyke with a .45, but many of the hundreds of Gower Gulch extras who came to the trial testified that Tyke had started the fight and was “doped up” at the time. Blackjack entered a plea of not guilty based on self defense and temporary insanity and he was ultimately set free.

Mrs. Elaine Huddle and Dean Farris, witnesses at the trial for the murder of gambler George (Les) Bruneman. Farris was a bartender at the cafe owned by Huddle's husband, where the murder took place. Charged with the killing is ex-convict Peter Pianezzi. Pianezzi allegedly shot Bruneman 16 times and then fatally shot Frank A. Greuzard, a cafe employee who tried to chase after him. Both Farris and Huddle positively identified Pianezzi as the murderer. The murder, which took place on October 25, 1937, is thought to have been gang-related. There were two trials for this case. The first ended in a hung jury, 9-3 for the acquittal of Pianezzi. In the second, Pianezzi received a life sentence for the two murders. Later, at age 80, Pianezzi received a pardon based on innocence.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 47 and rescuers, carrying David Swaim on a stretcher after he suffered a minor heart attack on a hike in which the troop was marooned overnight in Arroyo Seco Canyon. The scouts became lost on their way back during a seven mile hike between Switzer's Camp and Oake Wilde. The troop lit matches to signal a rescue party of parents, deputy sheriffs, and county prisoners. All, including Swaim, survived the ordeal.

The fire was fed by leaking gasoline and threatened at least five terminals in the harbor. At least 22 were injured and 9, possibly 12, people were killed. Damage was estimated at $10,000,000.
