Martin Ronne, sailmaker of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, stands at center and poses with a nautical knot. He smiles to camera as he holds and points to a knot to the right of him. Behind Ronne, ship equipment lies strewn across the deck of the C. A. Larsen. A large ship cabin rises behind Ronne at left and a mast passes overhead. The Port of Los Angeles is visible in the far distance.

Portrait of Estelle De Broglie, United States (?), circa 1926

Description:
Estelle Alexander, an American from San Francisco, married French aristocrat François Marie Constant Amédée Robert de Broglie (known as Prince Robert de Broglie) in the early 1900s, after which she was known as (Princess) Estelle de Broglie. They had a daughter, Jassemonde Estelle Siglinde de Broglie. According to newspaper accounts, they gave concerts, with Estelle, a soprano, singing, and Robert conducting the orchestra. The marriage was eventually annulled. Estelle continued to live in France and visited the United States in 1929 intending to regain U.S. citizenship. She died at Auschwitz in 1944, and is identified as "Estelle Alexander 1872" on the Mémorial de la Shoah (Shoah Memorial) in Paris. In documents, her name is sometimes given as Estella Dolores Alexander. Photo appears with the article: "CHIEF ATTRACTION FAILS TO APPEAR: PRINCESS SIDESTEPS ON SHOW Mrs. Astor Has to Put on Fashion Event Without Piece de Resistance," Los Angeles Times, 14 Nov. 1929: 3. Duffy Lewis when he was player and manager for the Portland Beavers, 1925

Description:
George Edward "Duffy" Lewis was a left fielder and right handed batter who played Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox (1910–17), New York Yankees (1919–20) and Washington Senators (1921). Lewis attended Saint Mary's College of California. In 1925, he was the player-manager of Portland in the PCL, hitting .294 for the Beavers.

Group portrait of children outside tents after the flood resulting from the failure of the Saint Francis Dam, Santa Clara River Valley (Calif.), 1928

Description:
The St. Francis Dam was a 200-foot high concrete gravity-arch dam built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon (near present-day Castaic and Santa Clarita). The dam collapsed on March 12, 1928 at two and a half minutes before midnight. The resulting flood killed more than 600 residents plus an unknown number of itinerant farm workers camped in San Francisquito Canyon, making it the 2nd greatest loss of life in California after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is considered the worst American civil engineering failure in the 20th century.
