Police Captain Earle E. Kynette sits in court after being charged with conspiracy to commit murder, Los Angeles, 1938

Description:
Kynette can be seen wearing eyeglasses. Captain of Police Earle E. Kynette was charged with conspiracy to commit murder after the vehicle of Harry J. Raymond was bombed on January 14, 1938. Kynette was in charge of a special police intelligence unit that had been conducting surveillance on Raymond’s home from a nearby bungalow. Before the car bombing, Raymond had been conducting investigative work on Mayor Shaw and his possible connections with illegal gambling. Two other officers, Fred Browne and Roy J. Allen, connected with the intelligence unit were also charged with conspiracy to commit murder. However, Fred Browne was eventually acquitted. Kynette and Allen were both found guilty.

Description:
Hollywood mystery man and "golf wizard," John Montague, battles extradition charges. New York's Essex County Sheriff's Department charged Montague, real name LaVerne Moore, as being one of three burglars suspected of robbing a road house of $700 on April 5, 1930. While living in Los Angeles, Montague became incredibly popular with celebrities such as Bing Crosby, due in large part to his prowess at golf. Description:
Dr. George K. Dazey on the witness stand at the trial in which he is accused of murdering his second wife, actress Doris S. Dazey, in 1935. Doris Dazey's death was originally believed to be suicide by monoxide poisoning. However, witnesses claimed that Dr. Dazey had been boasting about committing the "perfect crime" and a night watchman testified to witnessing Dazey carry a woman's body from the house to the garage on the night of the murder. Other factors complicating the trial were the paternity of Doris and George Dazey's child, Doris Dazey's possible mental illness, and false testimonies from some of the witnesses. Dr. Dazey was ultimately acquitted of the crime.

Attorney A. Brigham Rose (seated left) and county grand jury member Clifford E. Clinton in the courtroom. Rose and Clinton, along with Clinton's fellow grand jury member Harry L. Ferguson and Rose's legal secretary Pauline Huff were charged with contempt when they allegedly withheld information regarding Clinton's investigation of vice and gambling in Los Angeles county. Superior Judge Wilson dropped the charges, calling them legally insufficient. An attempt to renew the citations of contempt was quickly abandoned when Rose, Clifford, Ferguson, and Huff finally took the stand to testify.

Clifford E. Clinton, Los Angeles restaurateur and philanthropist, appears in court beside his wife Nelda Clinton. At the time of this photo, Clinton was a member of the Los Angeles County Grand Jury. He was cited for contempt of court for attempting to present the findings of his "Citizens' Independent Vice Investigating Committee (CIVIC)" before the Grand Jury, while refusing to name his sources or clarify what case he was attempting to present. Another Grand Jury member, Harry L. Ferguson, as well as Clinton's lawyer A. Brigham Rose and his legal secretary Pauline Huff, were all additionally cited for contempt. The charges were dismissed on December 1, 1937, on the technicality that the Grand Jury lacked the authority to issue the citation.

Description:
Mrs. Antibus sued Mr. Warner after her home was raided by Buron Fitts and several of his deputies at the request of Mr. Warner. The raid of Mrs. Antibus' home was conducted in order to search for Mr. Warner's son, Thomas W. Warner, Jr. Mr. Warner, Jr. was found hiding inside the home with his girlfriend Mrs. Jean MacDonald. The pair had been hiding in the home from Mr. Warner, Sr. who was opposed to their relationship and was seeking to end all contact between the pair. Mrs. Antibus served as a private detective for Mr. Warner, Jr. and had previously conducted an investigation into the life of Mrs. MacDonald in attempt to determine whether she was truly in love with Mr. Warner, Jr. Mrs. Antibus alleged that the raid left several of her visitors injured and was unnecessarily violent.

Doris Dazey's death was originally believed to be suicide by monoxide poisoning. However, witnesses claimed that Dr. Dazey had been boasting about committing the "perfect crime" and a night watchman testified to witnessing Dazey carry a woman's body from the house to the garage on the night of the murder. Other factors complicating the trial were the paternity of Doris and George Dazey's child, Doris Dazey's possible mental illness, and false testimonies from some of the witnesses. Dr. Dazey was ultimately acquitted of the crime.

Clifford E. Clinton, Los Angeles restaurateur and philanthropist, appears in court beside his wife Nelda Clinton. At the time of this photo, Clinton was a member of the Los Angeles County Grand Jury. He was cited for contempt of court for attempting to present the findings of his "Citizens' Independent Vice Investigating Committee (CIVIC)" before the Grand Jury, while refusing to name his sources or clarify what case he was attempting to present. Another Grand Jury member, Harry L. Ferguson, as well as Clinton's lawyer A. Brigham Rose and his legal secretary Pauline Huff, were all additionally cited for contempt. The charges were dismissed on December 1, 1937, on the technicality that the Grand Jury lacked the authority to issue the citation.

Thomas W. Warner Jr. testifies in his suit against Pearl Antibus, Los Angeles, 1938

Description:
Thomas W. Warner Jr., son of millionaire automobile parts manufacturing magnate Thomas W. Warner Sr., pictured on the stand. Warner Jr. had brought a suit against Pearl Antibus, a private investigator, whom he had hired to determine if his fiancee, Jean MacDonald, loved him for himself or was only interested in his fortune. Antibus investigated by placing a dictaphone in MacDonald's home. The sum total of her services came to $2500, $1500 of which was still owed to her. Warner disputed the amount, which he asserted he had never agreed to, and thus brought suit against Antibus. Superior Judge Stutsman ruled on April 14 that, as Antibus had successfully completed her services and determined that Warner's fiancee did love him, she thus was owed the full amount. He further opined that, after viewing Jean MacDonald on the stand, that "she is well worth that $1500 and more."

Kynette can be seen wearing eyeglasses. Captain of Police Earle E. Kynette was charged with conspiracy to commit murder after the vehicle of Harry J. Raymond was bombed on January 14, 1938. Kynette was in charge of a special police intelligence unit that had been conducting surveillance on Raymond’s home from a nearby bungalow. Before the car bombing, Raymond had been conducting investigative work on Mayor Shaw and his possible connections with illegal gambling. Two other officers, Fred Browne and Roy J. Allen, connected with the intelligence unit were also charged with conspiracy to commit murder. However, Fred Browne was eventually acquitted. Kynette and Allen were both found guilty.

During his testimony, Wilkinson admitted to accepting $4400 from "gambling czar" Guy McAfee. The money was used to pay outstanding bills incurred by "The Last Days of Pompeii" pageant, presented by the Federated Church Brotherhood, of which Wilkinson was chairman. In his testimony, Wilkinson avowed that the funds received from McAfee came without strings attached, and that he and the notorious gambler had prayed for an end to the latter’s gambling addiction. Wilkinson, who was a vice crusader, resigned from the Citizens' Independent Vice Investigating Committee following his testimony. However, his resignation was denied by several Committee members, who believed that accepting the funds should not affect Wilkinson's position on the Committee.

Kynette and his subordinate officers Roy J. Allen and Fred A. Browne were charged with the bombing. Kynette was in charge of a special police intelligence unit that had been conducting surveillance on Raymond’s home from a nearby bungalow. Before the car bombing, Raymond had been conducting investigative work on Mayor Shaw and his possible connections with illegal gambling.

Coroner Frank Nance listens to a testimony from Leona Navy at the Paul A. Wright inquest. Navy is a maid who lives in the home of Wright. Wright is accused of the murder of his wife, Evelyn, and best friend, John Kimmel. Wright confessed to shooting the pair in a fit of "white hot rage" after finding them in an embrace in his home. After the inquest, complaints were signed against Wright for the two deaths. A trial, called the "white flame" trial by the press, followed in which Wright was eventually let off on an insanity plea, thanks to his lawyer Jerry Giesler.

Description:
Grand Jury member Clifford E. Clinton, who is charged with contempt for refusing to reveal the source of his information in a vice and gambling investigation. Three others, including attorney A. Brigham Rose, grand jury member Harry L. Ferguson, and Rose's legal secretary Pauline Huff were also charged. Superior Judge Wilson dropped the charges, calling them legally insufficient. An attempt to renew the citations of contempt was quickly abandoned when Rose, Clifford, Ferguson, and Huff finally took the stand to testify
