Martin Ronne, sailmaker of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, stands at center and poses with a nautical knot. He smiles to camera as he holds and points to a knot to the right of him. Behind Ronne, ship equipment lies strewn across the deck of the C. A. Larsen. A large ship cabin rises behind Ronne at left and a mast passes overhead. The Port of Los Angeles is visible in the far distance.

Group portrait of children outside tents after the flood resulting from the failure of the Saint Francis Dam, Santa Clara River Valley (Calif.), 1928

Description:
The St. Francis Dam was a 200-foot high concrete gravity-arch dam built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon (near present-day Castaic and Santa Clarita). The dam collapsed on March 12, 1928 at two and a half minutes before midnight. The resulting flood killed more than 600 residents plus an unknown number of itinerant farm workers camped in San Francisquito Canyon, making it the 2nd greatest loss of life in California after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is considered the worst American civil engineering failure in the 20th century.

Description:
Group portrait of about 24 disaster recovery workers seated on and standing next to a pickup truck after the failure of the Saint Francis Dam and resulting flood. The workers appear to be in a park with large trees shading wooden picnic tables with attached benches. A plank spanning a truck fender and picnic table and tools on the ground suggest that the men are engaged in construction or repair work. A painted sign in the door of the truck reads "...ople's...[Lum]ber Co. ...nta Paula." Santa Paula was one of the communities in the path of the flood. Beyond the park there is a metal rail fence, a street and a building across the street.

Description:
This is a portrait of Ina Branson and Helen Seelye, both of whom testified at the William E. Hickman kidnapping trial in 1928. Both Western Union employees, Helen Seelye identified one of the two telegrams sent to Marion Parker's father; and Ina Branson identified Hickman as the man who sent the kidnap telegrams.

Bishop Charles Reifsnider, 1928

Description:
Charles Reifsnider was a the Episcopal Suffragan Bishop of North Tokyo from 1924 to 1935, and the Bishop in charge of new diocesan work of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Japan from 1942 to 1946. He was also president of St. Paul University in Tokyo from 1912 to 1941; director of St. Luke's Hospital, Tokyo, from 1935 to 1941 and president of St. Margaret's College of Tokyo from 1935 to 1941.
