On this day, over 50,000 spectators wagered a total of $789,159 on the eight races held, toppling the previous records of 40,000 people and $599,009 wagered. Big winners of the day were horse He Did, who won the feature race by more than a length and Bing Crosby's horse High Strike, who won his sixth straight race.

Tower Theatre, Compton, lounge, entry

Description:
Designed for a working class community in Los Angeles, the Tower Theater is a modest design which presents a stylish black and white Deco exterior (62701). The night view shows the effective use of neon and spotlighting to illuminate the fluted Moderne tower (62702). The box office is surrounded by circles of light bulbs on the lobby ceiling and a sunburst design on the lobbyýs terrazzo floor (62703). Poster cases are framed by scrolled pediments and simulated columns. The interior uses exaggerated columns, mirrors, white traditional-style furniture, and gilt to suggest a palatial elegance that is distant from the lives of the theatreýs clientele (62704-62705). Hanging lanterns and striped upholstery in the auditorium impart a subdued elegance (62706-62707).

Soldier in an army uniform including a helmet and leather boots, holding a flag and standing in the grass next to a street lamp post on a street corner. On his helmet is written: "CAL HUT 273" and there are medals on his jacket. In the background are other soldiers in uniform including one in a navy uniform; some also hold flags on tall flag poles and several flags are placed against a tree. On the street lamp is a sign reading: "Emergency Sign Service. No Parking by order of Police Dep... Auto Club of So. Calif."

Description:
Tony Cornero on his newly refurbished gambling ship, the Bunker Hill (also known as the Lux), which was meant to operate offshore of Los Angeles. After the Bunker Hill’s opening night, however, Cornero and five of his aides were arrested on felony charges of criminal conspiracy to conduct gambling games and serve alcohol without a license. After his arrest, Cornero announced that he was ready to go to the United States Supreme court to keep the Bunker Hill running. Cornero was also “admiral” of the Rex, another gambling vessel which was forced to suspend operations in 1938.
