Description:
Inside the Commercial Exchange Building. Most likely related to 1935 construction that removed a 10-foot section in the middle of the building. Building was owned by the Kress House Moving Company and the work was done by architects and engineers Walker & Eisen. Building at 416 W. 8th St (corner Olive Streets), Downtown Los Angeles.

Val Verde resort, Santa Clarita Valley, 1940s

Description:
Prominent African American Angelenos, such as Sydney P. Dones, Norman O. Houston, Joe and Charlotta Bass, and others began constructing a black-owned vacation resort for African Americans in 1924 on 1,000 acres in the Santa Clarita Valley, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles. It was originally called Eureka Villa. The community's slogan was "Industry, Education, Pleasure, Religion." Later, community members changed the name of the community back to Val Verde. In 1940, the resort opened its brand new Olympic-sized pool (pictured here), which was partially financed by the WPA. The resort was tremendously popular, nicknamed "The Black Palm Springs."

Villa Dar Marroc, the studio and home of painter Gordon Coutts, with crenelated roofline, dome, and horseshoe arches, Palm Springs, 1924-1937

Description:
Built in 1924 the villa Dar Marroc was modeled on Moroccan residences inTangiers by the Scottish artist, Gordon Coutts (1865-1937). The villa and surrounding property were owned by the silent screen actor and neighbor J. Carol Naish. The villa became part of the Korakia Pensione in 1989.

Exterior view of the ocean front terrace and terrace facade of the Villa de Leon, and the stairs leading from the paved terrace to the garden terrace below. The terrace is paced in a checkerboard pattern of dark and light stone. There is a nude statue on a pedestal and the coast is visible beyond the terrace.

Executive vice president of the Southern California Edison Co., W.C. Mullendore, and president of Levi Strauss & Co., Walter Haas, at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce’s 49th annual banquet in the Ambassador Hotel’s fiesta room. Over 1,000 business, civic and social leaders attended the banquet which is held every year on George Washington’s birthday. The event celebrates the achievements of the Chamber of Commerce over the past year and lays out programs for the coming year.
