Completely furnished miniature four-room old English house on 4-year-old Gloria Lloyd’s private estate, which was created by her parents, film comedian Harold Lloyd and Mildred Harris Lloyd, at the summit of the family’s sixteen acre home. In addition to the house, Gloria’s estate includes: a miniature stable for her pony and cart, a miniature wishing well and a slide, swing and sand pile.

Beverly Hills home of William F. Gettle, kidnapping victim. May 1934.

Description:
Beverly Hills home of businessman and millionaire William F. Gettle, at 723 North Linden Drive. Gettle was kidnapped from the grounds of from his Arcadia ranch house during a party on the eve of May 9th. The kidnapping attracted a great deal of attention in the community, with Mrs. Gettle even addressing the kidnappers through the pages of the Los Angeles Times. The kidnappers demanded a $60,000 ransom for the return of Gettle, which Mrs. Gettle agreed to pay. However, before the ransom was paid, two detectives of the LAPD, Chester Burris and H.P. Gearhardt, broke the case after installing a dictaphone in the home of a bank robbery suspect. Information from the dictaphone led them to a La Crescenta home where Gettle was held. He was returned, unharmed, to his family on the eve of May 14th.

Young Los Angelino Yvonne Marion Wolff sits piled under produce grown in a local community garden.Beginning in 1933, small tracts of land throughout Los Angeles county were used by the government as locations for community gardens, where men left unemployed by the Great Depression could work and grow food to feed their families. In 1933, 890 acres of land in Los Angeles County were used toward this purpose; the program expanded to 2,500 acres of land in 1934. This land was approximately enough to grow the vegetables consumed by 20,000 county welfare families.

Rescuers carrying David Swaim on a stretcher after he suffered a minor heart attack during a hike in Arroyo Seco Canyon, Los Angeles, December 9, 1946

Description:
Members of Boy Scout Troop 47 and rescuers, carrying David Swaim on a stretcher after he suffered a minor heart attack on a hike in which the troop was marooned overnight in Arroyo Seco Canyon. The scouts became lost on their way back during a seven mile hike between Switzer's Camp and Oake Wilde. The troop lit matches to signal a rescue party of parents, deputy sheriffs, and county prisoners. All, including Swaim, survived the ordeal.

Beginning in 1933, small tracts of land throughout Los Angeles county were used by the government as locations for community gardens, where men left unemployed by the Great Depression could work and grow food to feed their families. In 1933, 890 acres of land in Los Angeles County were used toward this purpose; the program expanded to 2,500 acres of land in 1934. This land was approximately enough to grow the vegetables consumed by 20,000 county welfare families.The man posed in front, W.C. Spurling (or possibly Spiering), is a local man deeply involved in the organization of the community garden programs.
