Description:
Women evacuating Staber’s Beauty Salon because of a fire at the nearby Melody Lane Café. The fire began in the roof of the Melody Lane kitchen and high winds swept the blaze through neighboring Wilshire Blvd. businesses including Staber’s Salon, the Pig’n Whistle candy and pastry shop, Randall Optometrist, McKiernan’s Fashions, Horton & Converse Pharmacy. Capt. Noble Swanson suffered a back sprain, bruises and cuts when a section of roof caved in on him. No one else was injured but total damage was estimated to exceed $200,000.

Description:
View from below of damage to a L.A. Harbor terminal after the Markay, an oil tanker owned by the Keystone Tankship Corp., exploded in the wee hours of the morning. The fire was fed by leaking gasoline and threatened at least five terminals in the harbor. At least 22 were injured and 9, possibly 12, people were killed. Damage was estimated at $10,000,000.

The tin toy, by Marx, is "Tidy Tim," identified by the inscription on trash bin, which also includes the inscriptions "D.S.C" and "Keep your City Spick & Span Says Tidy Tim the Clean-up Man" (seen online). Online examples of this toy are dated from 1933 into the 1950's.

The Children's Home Society of California is a non-profit child welfare agency founded in 1891. It became the first licensed child placement agency in California in 1911. It was located at 919 E. 25th St. from the 1920's up to 1942, when the organization moved to the Ozro W. Childs mansion at 3100 W. Adams Blvd. where it remained until 1977.
