Description:
Handwriting on negative states "Mrs.Walburga Oesterreich" In 1922 Walburga Oesterreich’s husband Fred Oesterreich was shot and killed supposedly by a burglar in their Los Angeles, Calif. home. Eight years later after being arrested for another crime Otto Sanhuber confessed to police that he had killed Fred Oesterreich in party with Walburga. Sanhuber stated that he had lived in the attic of the Oesterreich’s home for years in order to carry on an affair with Walburga. In 1930 Sanhuber was put on trial and was convicted of manslaughter. Walburga Oesterreich was tried for murder and conspiracy but her jury ended in deadlock. She was never retried.

William J. Powell created the Bessie Coleman Flying School in the 1930s. The image of the women pilots in this advertisement also appears, in fuller form, in an advertisement for Craftsmen of Black Wings, and the same women appear in an image of the members of the Bessie Coleman Aero [Aeronautics] Club, also founded by Powell.

African American composers and arrangers, circa 1930

Description:
Harry Lawrence Freeman was a composer, conductor, impresario and teacher. He was the first African-American to write an opera (Epthalia, 1891) that was successfully produced. Freeman founded the Freeman School of Music and the Freeman School of Grand Opera, as well as several short-lived opera companies which gave first performances of his own compositions. He was married to actress and singer, Charlotte (Carlotta) Louise Thomas.

Description:
Snow covers the Angeles Crest Highway which spans the width of the bottom edge and stretches into the distance. At center, an arched gateway rises and passes over the road. Two crenelated, stone towers stand on either side of the road. An archway stretches between the towers and across the road. Carved text along the front side of the arch reads, "BIG PINES-L.A. COUNTY CAMP." A keystone sits at the center of the arch.

View of African American swimmers at the Municipal Plunge swimming pool in Griffith Park, which opened on August 13, 1927. Los Angeles public swimming pools were open to African Americans only one day a week until August 16, 1931, after which a court decision opened public pools to all races on all days. This photograph was probably taken before the implementation of that court decision.

View of a bedroom in the penthouse of the Oviatt Building with a bed, bedside tables, ornate throw pillows and velvet curtains. The Oviatt Building (617 South Olive St; constructed 1927-1928) was designed for the clothier, James Zera Oviatt, a partner in the establishment, Alexander and Oviatt. The penthouse was decorated by the Paris interior design firm, Saddler et fils. Reported in "Castle in air houses Oviatt," Los Angeles Times, 30 Mar. 1930: A3.

Betty Hill, Los Angeles, 1920-1940

Description:
Betty Hill, dubbed by the Los Angeles Sentinel the "Mother of Negro Political Leaders," founded the Women's Republican Study Club (later the Women's Political Study Club) in Los Angeles in 1929. Her many causes included fighting Jim Crow in Los Angeles hospitals and public swimming pools, abolishing separate civil service lists for African American school teachers, and getting the Board of Education to approve a child care center program. Hill was married to Sgt. Abraham Hill.
