Start of journey of Southern California Townsend club members to Chicago for national convention. Clubs named after Dr. Francis Townsend to advocate for his old age pension plans, a precursor to Social Security. West was western divisional director of Townsend club; Litchenfels, state area officer; Highley, President of Los Angeles club; Biddlecom, member of national advisory board. Wives of Bliss and Highley also present.

Inside the Commercial Exchange Building. Most likely related to 1935 construction that removed a 10-foot section in the middle of the building. Building was owned by the Kress House Moving Company and the work was done by architects and engineers Walker & Eisen. Building at 416 W. 8th St (corner Olive Streets), Downtown Los Angeles.

Pilling (right), director of the Los Angeles County Relief Association, and Archibald Young, chairman of the Citizens' Relief Committee of Los Angeles. All three men held various high-level positions within California's State Emergency Relief Association and related groups over the course of their careers in public service. These groups included SERA's successor the California State Relief Association and its local branches, and the Citizens' Relief Committee.

Los Angeles District Attorney Buron Fitts and Special Prosecutor Clyde Shoemaker, pictured at Fitts' perjury trial, circa January 1936. Dist. Atty Fitts was charged with perjuring himself during testimony to a 1931 grand jury, in regards to real estate transactions carried out by his family. His sister and secretary, Mrs. Berthal Gregory, was also a defendant in this case.

Description:
John H. Ozmun is pictured in his "Highwheeler" Model 3 Holsman automobile, after completing a cross-country drive from Akron, Ohio to San Diego, California. The Holsman Model 3 was manufactured by the Holsman Automobile Company of Chicago, Illinois from 1902 to 1910. The car averaged twenty miles to the gallon during its trip to the West coast, a trip which took Ozmun twenty-six days. Ozmun later drove the Model 3 across the country again, to attend the 1939 World Fair in New York.

Mrs. Hazel Belford Glab appears in court to testify in her defense, in the murder trial of John I. Glab. March 16, 1936

Description:
Mrs. Hazel Belford Glab appears in court to give testimony in her defense on March 16, 1936. Glab was accused of the 1928 murder of her husband, pharmacist John I. Glab. Mrs. Glab had been only recently convicted of forging the will of her late fiancee, wealthy manufacturer Albert Cheney, who died in Las Vegas before the two could be wed. John I. Glab was shot in the home he and Hazel Glab shared, on the evening of June 18, 1928. Mrs. Glab contested that her husband had been shot by her former lover, policeman W. R. McIntyre, and that she had been home listening to the radio with her niece the eve of the murder and had not heard the shot. Glab had been married to the pharmacist for only 16 months.Hazel Glab was convicted of second-degree murder on March 21, 1936.

Spectators at a $50,000 Derby day at the Santa Anita racetrack on February 22, 1937. The crowd in attendance was estimated at 45,000 spectators. Twenty-three horses raced that day, beating out the Kentucky Derby's record of twenty-two starting horses at that time. The $50,000 purse was won by the horse Fairy Hill.

Description:
Herman E. Hubler and his wife Anna L. Hubler, who are accused of involvement in a theater bank night fraud scandal. The couple convinced numerous community theaters to use their 14-year-old daughter Blanche, known as Goldilocks, to pull the winning ticket in the bank night lottery. Goldilocks would palm a fake ticket and the winner would be one of the Hubler's accomplices, Alexander Szymanski or Roy Keown. The defendants admitted to winning thousands of dollars through the scandal.

Capt. Leopold McLaglen, self-styled Jiu-Jitsu champion of the world, appears in court over charges that he attempted to blackmail and extort his former employer, millionaire Philip M. Chancellor. McLaglen was accused of threatening to implicate Chancellor in a robbery, unless Chancellor paid McLaglen $20,000. McLaglen is accompanied in court by his lawyer, Harry F. Sewell, at left. November 18, 1937.

The camp, which was organized by Sheriff Biscailuz, lasted hosted groups of 100 boys for 10 days at a time. While at camp, the boys participated in activities such as swimming, fencing, baseball, various hobbies, and a nonsectarian religious program. The camp's 1937 season lasted from July 6th to September 4th.
