Description:
Billy G. Mills is a retired Los Angeles Superior Court judge and a former Los Angeles City Council member, serving from 1963 to 1974. He was one of the first three African-Americans elected to the council. He received an associate in arts degree from Compton College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA in 1951. While an undergraduate, he joined the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He earned a law degree from UCLA in 1954.

Betye Saar’s is an African American artist whose work mixes surreal, symbolic imagery with a folk art aesthetic. As a participant in the African-American Los Angeles art scene of the 1970s, Saar appropriated characters such as Aunt Jemima, Uncle Tom, and other stereotypes from folk culture and advertising in her works—usually collages and assemblages.

Description:
Betty Hill, dubbed by the Los Angeles Sentinel the "Mother of Negro Political Leaders," founded the Women's Republican Study Club (later the Women's Political Study Club) in Los Angeles in 1929. Her many causes included fighting Jim Crow in Los Angeles hospitals and public swimming pools, abolishing separate civil service lists for African American school teachers, and getting the Board of Education to approve a child care center program. Hill was married to Sgt. Abraham Hill.

Bessie Coleman, African American airplane pilot, 1921-1926

Description:
Bessie Coleman was an African American civil aviator. She was the first woman of African-American descent to hold a civilian pilot license. Due to discrimination against blacks in the U. S., she traveled to Paris in, 1920 to learn to fly and earn an international pilot's license. She then returned to the United States in 1921 and became a "barnstorming" stunt flier. "Queen Bess," as she was known, was a highly popular draw for the next five years. She was a speaker, was often interviewed by newspapers, and she was admired by both blacks and whites. In 1926 Coleman died in a tragic airplane accident. She was 34 years old.

Description:
Robert James Boyd was born in North Carolina. He married Emma P. Barrett in Los Angeles and in 1910 they lived at 1242 El Molino (now 1242 Kenmore Ave.) in Los Angeles, next to 1244 El Molino, where Emma had lived with her family before she was married from as early as 1900. By 1917, he is reported as working in a barbershop in Riverside city directories from 1917 to 1947. According to Miriam Matthews, he owned the barbershop. Robert and Emma had four children: Barrett, Willis, Helen and Edward.

Description:
Anna Madah Hyers was and African American singer and performed in black musical theater. With her sister, Emma Louise Hyers, Joseph Bradford and Pauline Hopkins, the Hyers Sisters produced the "first full-fledged musical plays in which African Americans themselves comment on the plight of the slaves and the relief of Emancipation without the disguises of minstrel comedy." Their first play was Out of Bondage (also known as Out of the Wilderness), followed by Urlina, the African Princess, The Underground Railway, and Uncle Tom's Cabin.
