Description:
Photograph of a teacher with a student holding a handmade sign that reads in English, “VOTE SCHOOL BONDS MARCH 20”. They are inside the tent that serves as the school’s classroom, which is the reason they are canvasing for school bonds. The Los Angeles Times newspaper reports indicate that school bonds would fund brand new fireproof and earthquake-proof buildings to house Los Angeles schools.

Photograph of Ronald Mansbridge, representative of the Cambridge University Press, with the Rare Book Exhibition at the downtown Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library. In the display case there are some photos of old portraits, some rare books, and two informational signs in English. The small paper on the top reads, “Four centuries of printing, An exhibition of books printed at the University Press, Cambridge, England,” and the large panel underneath reads, “Cambridge University Press, In Past Centuries, Books by Erasmus, Newton, Harvey, Donne, Gray, Milton, King Hames I. Political cartoon featuring oil clouds over the Santa Monica Bay, commentary on oil drilling, 1954

Description:
In 1954, a contractual agreement was made between General Petroleum and the Santa Monica City Council in which the oil concern was granted a 10-year lease on Santa Monica tidelands. General Petroleum offered the city $500,000 and 35% royalties from recovered oil. The contract was dependent on a voter referendum that would change pre-existing city ordinances, thus allowing for oil drilling in city-owned tidelands. The amendment proposal lost by a 3:1 margin.
