Description:
Fellow firefighter attends to Capt. Noble Swanson who was injured when a section of roof caved in during a fire at the Melody Lane Café on Wilshire Blvd. The fire began in the roof of the Melody Lane kitchen and high winds swept the blaze through neighboring businesses including the Pig’n Whistle candy and pastry shop, Randall Optometrist, McKiernan’s Fashions, Horton & Converse Pharmacy and Staber’s Beauty Salon. Noble suffered a back sprain, bruises and cuts. No one else was injured but total damage was estimated to exceed $200,000.

Dick Russell signing the speeding ticket he received from police officer Dick Barlow during a planned race between an automobile and a bus. The race was part of a "Don't be April fools, obey Traffic rules" campaign to prove that safe driving always prospers. Russell sped and disobeyed traffic laws in the automobile and almost beat safe driver Frank Lampley's bus full of Chamber of Commerce ladies, until the officer intervened. Russell is holding the Dunce cap he was obliged to wear after the exercise.

Description:
Chamber of Commerce ladies chastising Dick Russell for the speeding ticket he received from motorcycle officer Dick Barlow during a planned race between an automobile and a bus. The race was part of a "Don't be April fools, obey Traffic rules" campaign to prove that safe driving always prospers. Russell sped and disobeyed traffic laws in the automobile and almost beat safe driver Frank Lampley's bus full of Chamber of Commerce ladies, until the officer intervened.

Description:
Fellow firefighter attends to Capt. Noble Swanson who was injured when a section of roof caved in during a fire at the Melody Lane Café on Wilshire Blvd. The fire began in the roof of the Melody Lane kitchen and high winds swept the blaze through neighboring businesses including the Pig’n Whistle candy and pastry shop, Randall Optometrist, McKiernan’s Fashions, Horton & Converse Pharmacy and Staber’s Beauty Salon. Noble suffered a back sprain, bruises and cuts. No one else was injured but total damage was estimated to exceed $200,000.

Description:
Shirley Smith, 14, and her brother Donald Smith, 11, were "abandoned" after their mother, Betty Alice Phillips, and father, Melvin D. Smith, both declared that they were unable to care for the children. The father, Mr. Smith, stated that he was re-married and had three children from his second wife. He asked to be relieved of custody because the two sets of children did not get along. Mrs. Phillips asked to be relieved of custody because she was in the process of divorcing her second husband and did not have a home to provide the children. Ultimately, Mrs. Phillips secured a home from her estranged husband and agreed to keep custody of the children. Superior Judge Fred Miller awarded custody to Mrs. Phillips.
