The Los Angeles aqueduct was bombed or otherwise vandalized in at least 10 incidents from 1924 to 1931. Cf. (1) Los Angeles Times article, 20 June 1927, “City Aqueduct Again Blasted, Dynamite Tears Out Sixteen-Foot Section, Fourth Recent Outrage Done During Night Hours, Explosion Occurs Two Miles South of Lone Pine.” The article states: “A heavy charge of dynamite exploded in the fourth attempt within the past month … shattered a sixteen-foot panel of waterway at the Puddle Creek Delta, two miles southwest of Lone Pine … Other outrages. Caption for a similar photograph taken on the same occasion: Bouquet Canyon Earth-Fill Dam Rapidly Taking on Permanent Form. Work Progressing. The city's dam in Bouquet Canyon to furnish storage for both water and power and to replace the ill-fated St. Francis Dam is rising steadily each day to the tune of rumbling trucks hauling earth from the pits to the dam site. The view here is from upstream looking at the concrete covered upstream face. The white streaks are streams of water poured on to aid the concrete to cure properly [Los Angeles Times, 6 Sept. 1933].

Description:
Charles Kassler Jr. was a painter, printmaker, and lithographer. He lost a hand during a high school chemistry experiment. He studied art and architecture at Princeton University and the Chicago Art Institute. From 1925 to 1932 Kassler continued his studies while living at various times in New Mexico, Europe, and North Africa. While in France he apprenticed himself to a well-known fresco painter. He was active in Denver before moving to Los Angeles in 1933. He painted murals for the Federal Art Project and was an instructor at the Chouinard Art School (1933-34) and School of Design in Pasadena (1939).

Moeur of five soldiers and one officer of the Arizona National Guard at the dam site. California officials professed not to be much worried. The dam is to be built, not by the State or water district, but by the Federal government, and Gov. Moeur may have Uncle Sam to contend with if he interferes."

In 1934, with plans in place for United States Reclamation Service and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to build Parker Dam on the Colorado River between Arizona and California, Arizona governor Benjamin B. Moeur protested the diversion of water to California by sending members of the Arizona National Guard to the dam construction site. A local ferry service also participated under the informal name of the Arizona Navy.

Description:
The St. Francis Dam was a 200-foot high concrete gravity-arch dam built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon (near present-day Castaic and Santa Clarita). The dam collapsed on March 12, 1928 at two and a half minutes before midnight. The resulting flood killed more than 600 residents plus an unknown number of itinerant farm workers camped in San Francisquito Canyon, making it the 2nd greatest loss of life in California after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is considered the worst American civil engineering failure in the 20th century.

Description:
The clubhouse was designed by noted Los Angeles architect Robert H. Orr, and was built by Azusa contractor Charles Mace. The building is located at 1003 N. Azusa Avenue. Orr designed many structures in the Los Angeles area including the iconic Wilshire Christian Church, and he was the supervising architect for Pomona College. Orr began his career as a draftsman for the architect William H. Weeks in Salinas in 1898 and was active as an architect in the Los Angeles area by 1908. Orr founded the firm Orr, Strange, Inslee & Senefeld in 1949 and he worked with this firm up to 1962, two years before his death.

Description:
Possibly related to the article “When Hollywood and I Were Babies, by Sally Taft Teschke (The first white girl born in Hollywood).” Los Angeles Times, 2 Dec. 1934. Article introduction reads: “Lion trails in Griffith Park--A dummy steam train on the boulevard--the snowstorm that left us white--orange souvenirs for the tourists and many another thing you never knew about the most famed city in the world.” Article reads, in part: "An early recollection was of the 'dummy' steam engine which ran along Hollywood Boulevard (then Prospect Avenue). There were seven Taft children and the engineer of that primitive street car always had to stop in front of our house to remove one or more of the Tafts from his track. ...One of the features of the P.E.’s excursion among the orange groves was that the tourist was told he could actually pick a real orange off the tree. So when the cars came through each day we would have to protect our groves from the devouring hands of tourists."

Description:
View from Broadway facing southwest towards First St. The old Los Angeles Times building and the adjacent building on the same block are being prepared for the May 1938 demolition. There is scaffolding around the base of both buildings. A sign on the adjacent building reads: "Being Wrecked by LA Wrecking Co. Inc., 810 E. 9th ... VA5135." A man on the 3rd floor of the adjacent building is handing wooden beams to a man on top of the scaffolding, who hands them to a man on the flatbed of a truck parked next to the scaffolding. A painted sign on the Times building reads: "Los Angeles Times, Largest Home Delivered Circulation on the Pacific Coast." The clock tower with its neon "Times" sign is visible above the roof line of the adjacent building. Old signs on the adjacent build read: "Double Cola," and "Old Mis[sion]."

Takes Governor’s Party From Parker to Scene of ‘Invasion,’ California Water District Crew Fails to Welcome ‘Foreigners' Arrival," Los Angeles Times, March 7, 1934. The article states: "…The Julia B., happily dubbed, for the occasion, Arizona’s navy, came through in grand style today by carrying Gov. Moeur’s military reconnaissance party fifteen miles up the murky Colorado … piloted by Capt. Tom Kinder and Ascension Esquerra. … It was the first time, since war days, that such a boat had come up the river. Once during the war the Julia B., or her sister ship the Nellie Jo, hauled twenty tons of manganese up the river. At the wheel most of the trip today was none other than the able woman member of the Arizona Legislature … Mrs. Nellie T. Bush [and] … her husband, Joe Bush..."

Related to the article, “Heart is Torn From Great City. San Francisco Nearly Destroyed by Earthquakes and Fire, Hundreds of Killed and Injured, Destruction of Other Coast Cities, California’s Greatest Horror.” Los Angeles Times, 19 Apr. 1906. The article states: San Francisco, April 19.—It looks now as if the entire city would be burned, following the great quake of yesterday. ... At 10 o’clock at night, the fire was unabated, and thousands of people are fleeing to the hills and clamoring for places on ferry boats. The damage is now believed to have reached $200,000,000 and 50,000 people are thought to be homeless. ... At 10 p. m. last night the newspapers ceased all effort to collect news, and the Associated Press force is compelled to act independently. ... Tossing Six Hours on Seismic Waves. San Francisco, April 18.—During six hours of mortal dread and nameless terror San Francisco was today tossed upon the seismic waves of the most disastrous earthquake known to the history or the traditions of America’s west coast. In the mad confusion and helpless horror of this night uncounted bodies of dead men and women are lying in morgues and under uplifted walls. ... Fire and flame have added to the destruction, the ruination and despair. The material losses are beyond computation. ... There is no witness of this day’s story whose tongue or pen can describe the wreck and ruin, the death, the doom, the despair and suffering that lies on every hand. ... surrounded by explosions of illuminating and sewer gas. … The Southern Pacific is doing its utmost to get people out the city, and not charging refugees for transportation. ... Prof. George Davidson, of the University of California, formerly connected with the United States Geodetic Survey, said tonight: “The earthquakes came from north to south … Regarding the cause, I maintain, as I always have, that it is the earth cooling on the inside. The cooling brings about contraction, which is bound to bring about a readjustment of the earth’s surface. …” The entire waterfront district of the metropolis is made ground … Included in this area … Palace and Grand Hotels … Merchants Exchange … Stock Exchange … Nevada Bank, Western Union and Postal telegraph offices, the Crocker building … the Chronicle, the Examiner and the sixteen-story Call newspaper building. … From the ruins of the buildings shaken down by the five quakes that followed in such close succession, arose great bursts of flames which swept inward from the bay. … With water mains broken, fire department powerless, and flames spreading; with morgues and hospitals filled to overflowing; with electric lights and power wires down, and telephone and telegraph communication cut off; with railroads crippled … and with panic rampant, the condition of San Francisco was one of almost benumbing horror. …

Close-up of windows of the house of W. H. Bowers in Los Angeles. The photograph was taken in the course of a court proceeding in which his wife, Olive Orr Brugen-Schmidt Bowers, was accused of plotting to poison him with her friend Elmer M. Archer. Olive Bowers used window shade signals to let Archer know if her husband was at home or not. The poison plot was overheard on the 2-party telephone line.

Description:
In November 1933, wildfires raged through the San Gabriel Mountains above the Crescenta Valley. Two floods followed the next year. In late December, a series of storms dropped 12 inches of rain. On New Year's Eve, heavy rains led to sporadic flooding. Around midnight, mountain hillsides collapsed sending millions of tons of mud into the Crescenta Valley neighborhoods below. More than 400 homes were destroyed in La Cañada, La Crescenta, Montrose and Tujunga. Scores of people were killed, and hundreds were left homeless. Another rainstorm on October 17 caused additional flooding and damage, but no deaths.

Description:
The St. Francis Dam was a 200-foot high concrete gravity-arch dam built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon (near present-day Castaic and Santa Clarita). The dam collapsed on March 12, 1928 at two and a half minutes before midnight. The resulting flood killed more than 600 residents plus an unknown number of itinerant farm workers camped in San Francisquito Canyon, making it the 2nd greatest loss of life in California after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is considered the worst American civil engineering failure in the 20th century.
