NOTE: See copies of newspaper stories attached in re McCormick family member of which is Will Roger's next door neighbor in story below -- Will Rogers private beach and "lighthouse" bathouse, cafe, soft drink and hot dog stand, below Huntington Palisades, Santa Monica (Los Angeles beach), California, will shortly pass into ownership of the County of Los Angeles, if plans of supervisors in their effort to acquire more privately owned beach lands for public use go through ... Will's beach has been free to all comers. ... Will has for immediate neighbors Miss Virginia McCormick and her large staff ... on the choicest building plot ... relatives all multimillionaire heirs of the McCormick harvester millions. (see negatives enclosed) The McCormick estate stands high and secluded ... tightly-locked gates ... Will Roger's open-handedness in making the public at home on his beach near-by is in striking contrast with the McCormick situation mentioned above.

“Rigoletto” production with Enrico Porta, John Adams Auditorium, Santa Monica, 1949

Description:
Opera singer Enrico Porta, in the role of Rigoletto, sings while a crowd of nobles and courtiers look on. The singers wear costumes evoking 16th century attire - the female singers wear long gowns with full skirts and puffed sleeves. The men wear stockings, doublet-inspired tunics, ruff collars, and baldrics (for holding a sword) around the waist. Rigoletto wears an embroidered cape and braided belt with tassels. The stage set represents a room in the Duke’s palace complete with a throne (an ornate wooden chair covered with a canopy, placed on an elevated platform). The walls are built with faux columns and crests mounted on them. Musicians can be seen from the orchestra pit at foreground. Additionally, Natalie Garrotto (second from left) performs as a noblewoman and Jean Kortlander is visible as well (3rd from R).

Los Angeles Civic Grand Opera production of “Il Trovatore,” Act 1, Scene 2. Leonora, portrayed by Barbara Patton, sings at center stage. The setting is a walled palace garden with trees and a bench. A piano and musicians are viewed in the orchestra pit at foreground. Opera performed at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, Los Angeles.

Sorrento Beach Club, Santa Monica, 1952

Description:
P. H. Philbin, of Chicago, a former owner of the Sorrento Beach Club building, had planned a 12-story apartment building on the site in 1953. The project included utilizing the massive concrete Sorrento Beach Club structure which had been abandoned in an unfinished state. The project was controversial, as some property owners felt that it would mar the beauty of the Santa Monica Palisades Park.

The Hotel Playa Ensenada opened on October 31, 1930. Later known as the Hotel Riviera del Pacifico, it was an elegant gambling casino developed by the North American Compañía Mexicana del Rosarito. The architect was Gordon E. Mayer. The hotel was closed and partly demolished in 1964. Partly rebuilt in 1978, the hotel was reopened as the Centro Social, Cívico y Cultural de Ensenada
