1909 Oldsmobile Limited automobile with driver, 1939

Description:
Photograph of a 1909 Oldsmobile Limited being driven on a street. The driver is a man wearing a shirt, jacket, pants and flat cap. He is seated behind a steering wheel that is situated on the right side of the vehicle. The luxury auto has a large wheel base and rides on massive spoke wheels. The tall chassis requires two running boards to climb into the car. A spare tire rests atop the lower running board and is attached to the driver side door with metal bars and straps. All trim, lantern side lights and headlights are probably brass (standard for this vehicle). License plate frame reads: “C. Stanlee Martin Long Beach.” License plate reads: “California World’s Fair 39 3Y954.” In the background, an electricity tower sits at the edge of a vacant lot, giving way to what looks like a residential neighborhood in the distance. Location unidentified, but possibly Long Beach (where the car’s owner worked and lived).

Description:
William G. Bonelli (second from left), State Board of Equalization member, and Merle Templeton (far right), Chief Liquor Control Officer, both charged with involvement in a liquor license bribe scandal in which they allegedly conspired to extort money from liquor retailers under threat of causing them to lose their liquor license. Far left is A. Brigham Rose, attorney for Ed Levine, another alleged member of the pay-off ring, which included at least six members. Second from right is Judge Carlos S. Hardy, who was not the judge for the trial

The overlapping wall and ceiling surfaces, illuminated by indirect lighting, create a powerful perspective that focuses on the screen. The floor plan (2070001) and ceiling plan (2070001) show how the effect was achieved. Oversize leaf forms decorate the walls. Dark borders edging the ceiling panels accentuate the perspective.

The Academy Theatre was Leeýs most fully realized design in the Streamline Moderne mode. The extensive use of glass block, stainless steel, curved forms and modern graphics gave the building an image of modernity that suited the transitory commercial building type of the motion picture theatre, but was not often attempted in residential architecture or most commercial architecture.

Description:
View of the Ada E. Bowers Memorial Fountain in the courtyard of the Bowers Museum, with a statue of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, discoverer of California, and bas-relief scenes behind the statue and along the base of the fountain. To the left of Cabrillo is a rocky formation from which water issues. Behind Cabrillo are 3 scenes including Cabrillo and companions facing Indians on the sea shore with a ship in the ocean in the distance, a mission church, and Indians in a wooden carat (carretta) drawn by oxen. At the base are 8 bas-relief scenes apparently depicting episodes from the mission era and later settlement by ranchers and farmers. A plaque in the center bears the text "Mrs. Bowers Memorial Fountain."

Wilshire 'La Brea' L.A." Born Ada Williams, she married William T. Ince and became Ada Williams Ince. In 1934 Ada and William divorced. In 1935 Ada married Ray E. Dodge and became Ada Ince Dodge.
