One of the cornerstones of the old County Courthouse, which was located on the corner of Temple and Broadway, was opened to reveal a box from 1888 when the foundation was laid. Among the contents was an eight-page issue of the Los Angeles Times. The ceremony was led by Marshall Stimson, president of the Historical Society of Southern California, and Joseph Mesmer, president of the Pioneer Society.
The Hall of Records, left, stands tall against the empty lot that once housed the old County Courthouse. The street adjacent to the lot, on the right side of the photograph is Broadway.
The Times building opened in 1935, the State Building opened in 1932, and the Hall of Records was built between 1909 and 1912. When the street grid was adjusted in the 1920s the hall of records was left at an odd angle against Spring Street.
