Juan Bautista Alvarado was a California politician who served as the Governor of Alta California from 1837 to 1842, prior to California's statehood. Alta California was originally a Spanish territory which became a Mexican territory in 1822. It included the modern U.S. states of California, Nevada, and Utah, along with parts of Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. Alvarado led a movement for Alta Californian independence in 1837, which was ultimately abandoned upon making peace with Mexico that same year.
