- Juan Bautista Alvarado was a California politician who served as the Governor of Alta California from 1837 to 1842, prior to California's statehood. It included the modern U.S. states of California, Nevada, and Utah, along with parts of Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. Alvarado led a movement for Alta Californian independence in 1837, which was ultimately abandoned upon making peace with Mexico that same year.
