Dr. Vada Somerville (born Vada Jetmore Watson) of Pomona graduated from USC, married dentist John Alexander Somerville (1912), was the first African American woman and the second African American person to graduate from USC School of Dentistry (1918), and was the first African American woman certified to practice dentistry in the state of California. She was a civil rights activist, highly involved in several civic and community organizations.

After the session of California to the United States, the Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas land grant was patented to Maria Rita Valdez de Villa. She possessed the land from 1831 to 1854. After that, the property changed hands several times before becoming Beverly Hills in the early 20th century.

Miriam Matthews, sister of businesswoman Ella Matthews and lawyer Charles Matthews, was hired in 1927 as the first African American librarian in the Los Angeles Public Library. Matthews was also a civil rights activist, historian, and collector of African American art and primary source materials.

Jackie Robinson, between 1950-1972

Description:
Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947. When the Dodgers signed Robinson, they heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball that had relegated black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. [Wikipedia]. Robinson contributed significantly to the civil rights movement, used his influence, to promote nonviolence, and received NAACP's Spingarn Medal.

Description:
Printed map of the heart of Los Angeles with lines sketched in to show geographic distribution of African Americans, created sometime between 1923 and 1930. The map indicates dense African American populations along Jefferson Blvd, from Arlington to Vermont, and north of Slauson between Central Ave. and the Los Angeles River. This map was used to define what areas of the city to keep for white people to live in, and to block black migration. The practice was a way to prevent integration with African Americans based on the belief that when blacks move into white working class neighborhoods, the property values go down triggering urban blight. This exclusionary practice was known as “red lining”.

Westwood, (Linde) Medical Plaza by Paul R. Williams, Los Angeles, circa 1961

Description:
The Westwood (Linde) Medical Plaza, is a 12 story office building used for medical and dental procedures. Coined the “classic Modern-era style with a tall vertical mass of the building set against a long, horizontal mass.” Morris Linde was the head of the development and construction company that built the building. With other building design/construction collaborations, Linde and Williams, helped to change the face of Los Angeles County.
