James P. Beckwourth, mountain man, explorer, fur trader, circa 1856

Description:
James Beckwourth, of mixed-race, and was born into slavery in Virginia. His father was the plantation master, and his mother was an enslaved African American. Beckwourth became a trapper and explorer in California, where he lived with the Crow Nation for several years and married Crow women. He guided migrants to California and discovered the “Beckwourth Pass” through the mountains between Reno, Nevada and Portola, California.

Dr. Vada Somerville (born Vada Jetmore Watson) of Pomona graduated from USC, married dentist John Alexander Somerville (1912), was the first African American woman and the second African American person to graduate from USC School of Dentistry (1918), and was the first African American woman certified to practice dentistry in the state of California. She was a civil rights activist, highly involved in several civic and community organizations.

Group portrait of the Congregation of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, Los Angeles, 1961

Description:
Hamel Hartford Brookins was a bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church for 30 years and a civil rights activist. He helped start and was president of the United Civil Rights Council, which helped the black community recover from the Watts riots in 1965. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s he was an articulate, self-assured champion of black political empowerment.

Description:
Bessie Bruington Burke is recognized as the first black principal of a Los Angeles public school. She attended Los Angeles State Normal School (now part of UCLA) and earned her teaching credential in 1911. Her education was paid for by the Los Angeles Forum, a political and civic organization founded by African Americans in the early 20th century.

Description:
A. C. Bilbrew was the director of the first black choir featured in a film, 1928's Hearts of Dixie, which also happened to be the first black "talkie." She was also a pioneer in radio, becoming the first African American soloist on the radio in 1923, and later, the first African American to have and host a show in 1942. She was a cast member of the movie The Foxes of Harrow in 1947. Bilbrew was a champion of women's rights and childhood literacy; she was a community leader, musician, poet, and deputy to Kenneth Hahn (County Supervisor) A Los Angeles branch library is named after her.

James Homer Garrott, was an African-American architect active in the Los Angeles area in the mid-20th century who designed more than 200 buildings. He has been described as a "pivotal black Avant garde modernist of the 1940s era. He earned his architect's license (1928), studied Architecture at the University of Southern California (1930-1934) and was the second African-American admitted to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in Los Angeles (1946).

Thomas L. Griffith Jr. was a Superior Court judge who was the first black ever elected in a Los Angeles countywide vote and the first black attorney ever admitted to the Los Angeles County Bar Association. From 1934 to 1949 he headed the NAACP here and was at the forefront of the integration of municipal swimming pools.

Freita Shaw Johnson with Laurel and Hardy during the filming of "Pardon Us," 1931

Description:
Noble Johnson was a character actor in cinema, one of the few African Americans in the field during the studio era. A childhood friend of Lon Chaney, Johnson followed him into the industry in 1915. He was an extra in D.W. Griffith’s Intolerance (1916) as a Babylonian soldier. Because of his large size 6’2″, 215 lbs., Johnson was often cast in key character roles representing not just African Americans, but Native Americans, Asians, Arabians, and Pacific Islanders. Johnson founded Lincoln Motion Picture Company, the first American studio that produced “race” films, pictures for African Americans, exclusively, from 1916 to 1923. He continued to work in the sound era, retiring at the age of 69.

Description:
After the session of California to the United States, the Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas land grant was patented to Maria Rita Valdez de Villa. She possessed the land from 1831 to 1854. After that, the property changed hands several times before becoming Beverly Hills in the early 20th century.

Betty Hill, circa 1920

Description:
Betty Hill, dubbed by the Los Angeles Sentinel the "Mother of Negro Political Leaders," founded the Women's Republican Study Club (later the Women's Political Study Club) in Los Angeles in 1929. Her many causes included fighting Jim Crow in Los Angeles hospitals and public swimming pools, abolishing separate civil service lists for African American school teachers, and getting the Board of Education to approve a child care center program. Hill was married to Sgt. Abraham Hill.

Colonel Allensworth in a group portrait with military colleagues, 1900

Description:
After his retirement from the military in 1906, Colonel Allen Allensworth founded the town of Allensworth in 1908, with the idea that African Americans could own property, learn, thrive, and live the American Dream. It was named by Lt. Colonel Allen Allensworth. It had a school system by 1910. With the death of Colonel Allensworth in 1914, the town experienced extreme losses, coupled with severe drought and decreased crop yields. Many residents left the area following World War I. The town was memorialized as a state park in 1974, and hosts events annually to preserve its history.

John Biggers, 1955-1989

Description:
John Biggers was an African American artist known for his narrative murals and outstanding draftsmanship. Biggers dedicated his work to the depiction of the human condition. He drew inspiration from African art and culture, from the injustices of a segregated United States, from the stoic women of his own family, and from the heroism of everyday survival. His work continually evolved over the five decades of his career.

Description:
Anna Madah Hyers was and African American singer and performed in black musical theater. With her sister, Emma Louise Hyers, Joseph Bradford and Pauline Hopkins, the Hyers Sisters produced the "first full-fledged musical plays in which African Americans themselves comment on the plight of the slaves and the relief of Emancipation without the disguises of minstrel comedy." Their first play was Out of Bondage (also known as Out of the Wilderness), followed by Urlina, the African Princess, The Underground Railway, and Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Description:
Delta Sigma Theta' Sorority, Inc. is an African American women’s’ Greek organization that was founded on January 13, 1913 at Howard University. Delta Sigma Theta (ΔΣΘ; sometimes abbreviated Deltas or DST) is a Greek-lettered sorority of college-educated women dedicated to public service with an emphasis on programs that target the African American community. Today, it is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization. Since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta has created programming to improve political, education, and social and economic conditions, particularly within black communities. In addition to establishing independent programming, the sorority consistently collaborates with community organizations and corporations to further its programming goals.

Description:
Cynthiabelle Gordon Smith was born Cynthiabelle Black in Americus, Georgia. Her father was Alfred Black and her brother was Junior G. Black. She married the dentist, Dr. Isadore C. Mitchell (April 30, 1925). Shortly after, he completed dental school at Howard University and then moved to Los Angeles. In 1934, she moved to Washington, D.C. seeking work, and divorced Mitchell in 1936. In 1937 she was working for the U. S. Public Health Service in Washington, D. C. She married the physician Dr. Wilbur Gordon (possibly in 1942) and was widowed. She married Dr. R. Stillman Smith in 1947.

Joseph Blackburn Bass and Frederick Madison Roberts, Los Angeles (?), 1921-1930

Description:
Joseph Blackburn Bass founded the Topeka Call, a black community newspaper. He continued to work on that newspaper when it was purchased by another owner and its name changed to the Topeka Plaindealer. Bass was active in local politics, and in 1896 was one of the Kansas delegates to the Republican National Convention that nominated William McKinley for President. After a short stint publishing a black community newspaper in Helena, Montana, Bass moved to Los Angeles, where in 1913, he accepted Charlotta Spears' offer to edit the California Eagle. Spears and Bass married in 1914.
