Thomas L. Griffith Jr. was a Superior Court judge who was the first black ever elected in a Los Angeles countywide vote and the first black attorney ever admitted to the Los Angeles County Bar Association. From 1934 to 1949 he headed the NAACP here and was at the forefront of the integration of municipal swimming pools.
Dr. Frederic Hall was a professor at Dillard University. He studied at Morehouse College, Chicago Musical College, and Columbia University. He did research in West Africa on folk music, and he was a celebrated choral conductor.
William Grant Still was an American composer, who composed more than 150 works, including five symphonies and eight operas. [Wikipedia]

George Garner was an American vocalist and choral director. He was the first African American to solo at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was also the first African-American lead in a production at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California.
Verna Arvey was an American librettist, pianist and writer who is best known for her musical collaborations with her husband William Grant Still, a musician and composer.
Anna Griffith Morrow was a piano and vocal teacher. She was married to Virgil Morrow.
Lillie Hill Jones, was a member of the 2nd Baptist Church of Los Angeles, and a collector of sacred music. An archive of her collection is located at California State University Dominguez Hills.
