Description:
Memorial Day, also known as "Poppy Day", May 26, 1934. Pearl Lathrop, Marie Gore, and Emma Wolfegang, members of the Los Angeles American Legion Auxillary, hold bouquets of artificial poppies, made by veterans of the First World War. The poppies were sold by members of the American Legion Auxillary in order to raise money for disabled veterans and their families.Poppies were chosen as representative of Memorial Day due to their presence in the iconic World War I memorial poem, "In Flanders Fields". The poem was written by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

Description:
Men from families requiring state assistance hoe lettuce grown on community land. Beginning in 1933, small tracts of land throughout Los Angeles county were used by the government as locations for community gardens, where men left unemployed by the Great Depression could work and grow food to feed their families. In 1933, 890 acres of land in Los Angeles County were used toward this purpose; the program expanded to 2,500 acres of land in 1934. This land was approximately enough to grow the vegetables consumed by 20,000 county welfare families.The man posed in front, W.C. Spurling (or possibly Spiering), is a local man deeply involved in the organization of the community garden programs.

"Bride of the Sea" float in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1934

Description:
The "Bride of the Sea" float representing a beautiful young maiden riding beneath a floral canopy. The Pasadena Memorial Flagpole (Goodhue Flagpole) is visible behind the float in its original location in the middle of the intersection of Orange Grove and Colorado Boulevard. The float was entered by the city of Santa Monica.

The Pasadena Memorial Flagpole (Goodhue Flagpole) is visible behind the float on the right in its original location in the middle of the intersection of Orange Grove and Colorado Boulevard. The float was entered by the city of San Diego.

"Little America" float in the Toutnament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1934

Description:
The first base was established in 1929, while the last, Little America V, was established in 1956 at Kainan Bay. Little America II was established in 1934, and during the 1934-1935 expedition, many souvenir letters were sent from Little America, using a commemorative postage stamp issued by the U.S. government. Glendale's float received a special award, a consolation prize after the float's entry having been delayed en route to the parade.
