Description:
Mary Plettner (left), juror for the Helen Wills Love (right) murder trial, and Vada Sullivan, apparently a court officer (center). Mrs. Plettner was excused from her juror duties when she was found to be drunk on grain alcohol. Judge Smith found Plettner in contempt of court but delayed her sentence until the next day because of her condition.

Admiral William F. Halsey delivers farewell speech aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota, Los Angeles, 1945

Description:
Admiral William F. Halsey ended his 45-year naval career aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota in the Los Angeles Harbor. He commanded the Third Fleet during the Pacific War against Japan. The ceremony consisted of the changing of his four-starred flag to the two-starred flag of his successor, Rear-Admiral Howard F. Kingman. The ship's entire company was present during the brief ceremony. After the ceremony, Halsey left the battleship on a crash boat and the U.S.S. South Dakota fired a 17-gun salute.

The celebration included a parade that ended at the City Hall steps where McPherson greeted approximately 5000 people and the Mayor. Aimee Semple McPherson was a Los Angeles evangelist in the 1920s and 1930s who founded the Foursquare Church and Angelus Temple. Rheba Crawford Splivalo was associate pastor at Angelus Temple. Roberta Semple Smythe was the daughter of Aimee Semple McPherson.

Description:
A crowd outside the home of Anna Barnett, widow of Jackson Barnett, in Los Angeles' mid-Wilshire district. At the time, Barnett was in the midst of litigation in order to obtain her husband's $5,000,000 estate. The federal government had taken possession of the deceased Jackson Barnett's estate after his death in 1934, claiming that Mrs. Barnett was not his lawful wife. Anna Barnett, however, claimed that she and Jackson had been married for sixteen years, and that she had been instrumental in building his massive financial holdings in real estate and other sectors.On March 17, the government authorized a deputy District Attorney to inquire as to why Mrs. Barnett was not keeping the grounds of her Wilshire estate watered. Barnett countered that in her current financial circumstances, she could not afford the $30 monthly water bill to keep the lawn sprinkled, even though not watering the grounds violated local ordinances. The continued drama between Mrs. Barnett and the government attracted a fair amount of attention, as evinced in this photograph.

Deputy Sheriff J. A. Dixon and Attorney Ross F. Wilkins shaking hands after clearing up a misunderstanding that led to a fist fight between the two men at a jury selection session, Los Angeles, 1940

Description:
Attorney Ross F. Wilkins apologizing to Deputy Sheriff J. A. Dixon for engaging him in a fist fight during a jury selection session for the William Bonelli liquor license bribe trial. The fight started when Dixon told Wilkins he could not ride down in the elevator with the newly selected jury. Wilkins resisted and started punching Dixon when Dixon went to physically remove Wilkins from the elevator. Wilkins, who was uninvolved with the trial, claimed that he resisted because Dixon was in plain clothes and he didn't realize that he was an officer. Wilkins and Dixon appeared friendly during the apology.
