Officials survey a fissure that turned into a landslide in Elysian Park. The landslide started near the top of Buena Vista Peak as a small crack in the earth. The crack began separating at a rate of about half an inch every 24 hours, then became a meandering zig-zag, and finally a landslide on November 26, 1937. During the landslide 1,500,000 tons of loose rock and dirt tumbled down the hill and onto a 600 foot stretch of Riverside Drive. The disaster caused rerouting of traffic and attracted thousands of spectators. Because the initial crack was identified early, damage and injuries were largely avoided

Nathan O. Freedman (left) and Deputy District Attorney Arthur Veitch at one of two trials where ex-convict Peter Pianezzi is charged with a double murder. Freedman is Pianezzi's lawyer. Allegedly, Pianezzi shot gambler George (Les) Bruneman 16 times in a cafe, then fatally shot cafe employee Frank A. Greuzard when he tried to take down Pianezzi's license plate number. The murder, which occurred October 25, 1937 is thought to have been gang-related. Pianezzi's first trial ended with a hung jury, 9-3 for the acquittal of Pianezzi. In the second trial, Pianezzi received a life sentence for the murders. Later, at age 80, Pianezzi was pardoned based on innocence.

Mrs. Hazel Belford Glab appears in court to give testimony in her defense on March 16, 1936. Glab was accused of the 1928 murder of her husband, pharmacist John I. Glab. Mrs. Glab had been only recently convicted of forging the will of her late fiancee, wealthy manufacturer Albert Cheney, who died in Las Vegas before the two could be wed. John I. Glab was shot in the home he and Hazel Glab shared, on the evening of June 18, 1928. Mrs. Glab contested that her husband had been shot by her former lover, policeman W. R. McIntyre, and that she had been home listening to the radio with her niece the eve of the murder and had not heard the shot. Glab had been married to the pharmacist for only 16 months.Hazel Glab was convicted of second-degree murder on March 21, 1936.

Photo was taken during a trial in which Mrs. Norton is seeking $25,000 in damages against Jimmie Walker for the death of her husband, John Thomas Norton. Mr. Walker was allegedly driving 105 miles an hour when he lost control of the car containing Mr. Norton and three others. Mr. Norton and one other passenger died in the crash, two others were seriously injured, Walker sustained minor injuries. The defense argued that all passengers had been drinking before the accident.

Marie Gray, stage dancer, was cited to appear before Superior Judge Bullock in Psychopathic Court in the event of her recovery. She reportedly checked into a hotel, was assigned to a room on the second floor and five minutes later was seen to fall from a front window. She was treated for a broken left leg, a deep cut on the head and possible internal injuries.

Dyer admitted to luring the girls; Madeline Everett (9), Melba Everett (7), and Jeanette Stephens (8) into the woods on the pretense of helping them catch rabbits and then strangled them in succession. Dyer was sentenced to death after the jury's two day debate. On September 16, 1938 at San Quentin Prison, Dyer was one of the last people to be hung in the state of California

Helen Wright, three-year-old daughter of Paul A. Wright, who is accused of the double murder of his wife Evelyn and best friend, John Kimmel. Wright confessed to shooting the pair after finding them in an embrace in his home, he was eventually let off on an insanity plea. Wright's brother, Dr. Herbert Wright, sought custody of Helen and planned to take her back to his home in Cleveland. Paul Wright agreed that it would be best for his daughter to be removed from the aftermath of the tragedy and it was said that he was more concerned about the well-being of Helen, than his own welfare.

Remarkably, 400 crippled and elderly men and women, as well as 20 children in the nursery, escaped unharmed. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading throught the entire building, which had been in use since 1868. A short circuit in the electrical department on the ground floor was suspected to be the cause of the fire.
