Description:
An out-of-focus photograph, from left to right, of George Corwin and Robert T. Brain standing on the pier at Ocean Park with their fishing gear. The pier stretches along the bottom edge of the image on a slight upward angle from left to right. In the foreground, a basket, camera and some cans sit on the pier at center. Both George Corwin and Robert T. Brain stand along the wooden rail of the pier. George Corwin stands at left and looks to the camera while he holds a fishing rod. Robert T. Brain stands at right and looks to the camera as well. An unidentified man stands behind and to the right of Robert. His back is to the camera as he looks over the edge of the pier. In the background, the ocean extends behind them at left and center and the coastline stretches into the distance at right.

Description:
Photograph taken aboard an unidentified battleship visited by H. H. West and others just off-shore in Santa Monica. A man wearing a hat and with a hand in his pocket peeks into the frame from the left. Two large gun turrets are behind him and sit at the center of the photograph. To either side of that, there are two more, smaller, turrets. Atop the 2 large turrets at center, there is the ship's bridge. Visitors stand at a railing on top of the bridge amidst large guns that face outward to the right and left. On the deck, a uniformed naval serviceman approaches the large gun turrets from the left. Two women in dresses stand to the right of the large turrets. On the far right, a lifeboat hangs off the side of the ship.

Pinkie Lemberger stands at left and faces towards the right. She places a hand to her hat. Mertie Whitaker stands at center and further back from the camera. She smiles to the camera as she places both hands behind her head. At right, Nella West stands in profile, facing left. She too raises a hand to her hat. Behind them, a ranch-type wooden building extends from the left to the right. It has a railing, three semi-circular, spoked decorative elements on the side of the building, a pitched, corrugated roof and a large dormer at top with seven windows.

Josie Shaw was Mertie Whitaker's sister. William Shaw was Josie's husband, and Lester and Romayne Shaw were their sons. Abraham and Mary Whitaker were Mertie and Josie's parents. Agnes Hawley later became Forrest Whitaker's wife. Mertie Whitaker became H. H. West's second wife in the 1920's.

A captive seal lounges in its enclosure near the bathhouse, Santa Monica, 1901

Description:
Photograph of a seal lounging atop the concrete pool ledge in its enclosure. The seal is viewed through wire fencing. It lounges atop the front side of a small round pool constructed of brick and concrete. The seal lies on its stomach with its head lifted towards the right; a flipper hangs off the side of the pool. The rest of the wooden enclosure is seen in the background. Just left-of-center there are large windows extending out of the top of the photograph.
