According to the negative sleeve, the photographs in this group were taken in 1931. Key features of these images were nonexistent in 1931. Penguins were not exhibited at the San Diego Zoo until 1933. Alpha the Robot did not appear in the states until late 1934 and was a special attraction in San Diego during the California Pacific International Exposition (1935-1936). Based on this, it is most likely that the images were taken about 1935 during the exposition.

Description:
Photograph of the exterior of Eddie's Dining Room standing alongside a trail in Santa Anita Canyon. The trail stretches along the bottom edge of the image and narrows as it curves out of frame to the right. The dining room stands at left in partial view. It extends out of frame at left and back along the trail towards the right. A sign high over the door reads, "DINING ROOM." A couple of trees rise from the trail at center in front of the restaurant. A sign posted to one of the trees reads, "Eddie's DINING ROOM." Along the right side of the building, a posted sign reads, "HEADQUAR[TERS...] FOR PACK ANI[...] [????] ANIMAL [...] AND FROM [...] [????] [....] OR PHONE SER[VICE?] [...] MADRE [???]-[...]." Newton and Paradine Butler, brother sister, who traveled with the Butler Train in 1853, photograph copied 1935-1942

Description:
George Miller West travelled with the Butler (wagon) Train, (organized by the Butler family, members of the Disciples of Christ Church) from Monmouth, Illinois to Polk County, Oregon in 1853. West made the journey to mine in Oregon and California. He wrote a memoir relating incidents of crossing the plains to Oregon and his experiences in the goldfields of southern Oregon and northern California. The memoir was prepared in the form of a 49-page typescript by his son, H. H. West, who distributed the memoir to several libraries and archives, along with copied photographs of members of the Butler Train and one or two mining associates. The photographs were collected by H. H. West from about 1935 to 1942.

The Tehachapi Mountains is a mountain range in California that extends for approximately 40 miles in southern Kern County and northeastern Los Angeles County. The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a perennial and annual plant native to the United States. The plant is the official state flower of California.

Description:
Below the landscaping plan there is also a distant perspective view of the cutting garden. The house on the property was probably designed by the architecture firm of Webber, Stanton and Spaulding. It was constructed in 1927 by the firm Chisholm, Fortine & Meikle, Architecture, Engineering & Construction. The house was featured in Architectural Digest in 1928. The date for the cutting garden is from the nitrate negative sleeves for the photographic images.

Description:
Detective Lieutenant Ray Giese and Los Angeles County District Attorney Buron Fitts examine soiled clothing possibly owned by Thomas Edward Dugger. Dugger, known as "Ape Man", was convicted of eleven felonies related to the robbery, kidnapings, and assault of three women. Dugger was indicted on April 4, 1935 and sentenced to death by the Supreme Court on February 18, 1936.

The luncheon was hosted by the directors of the Chamber of Commerce after Roosevelt visited the Los Angeles Harbor and proclaimed it an ideal naval hub. Roosevelt is center, surrounded by two unidentified men. The Chamber of Commerce was located at 12th St. and Broadway.

Pete Schneider on trial for manslaughter on May 16, 1935. Schneider was accused of causing the death of G.A. Schnabel in a beer parlor fight on February 17, 1935. Peter Joseph Schneider, known as Pete Schneider (August 20, 1895 - June 1, 1957) was a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the Cincinnati Reds (1914-1918) and New York Yankees (1919). He was born in Los Angeles, California.

Chief Davis holds the burning mortgage to the Bide-a-Wee home founded by Minnie Barton, Los Angeles, 1935

Description:
Chief James Edgar Davis holds a box with the burning mortgage to the Bide-A-Wee home for women. The mortgage was set on fire by Gloria Swanson, silent film actress. Swanson helped Minnie Barton, home founder, pay the mortgage by sending $100 a month for several years. The group gathered to burn the mortgage in celebration of completing payment on the home set up by Barton to help working mothers. Also pictured are Mary Brill, president of the Big Sister League, Superior Judge Georgia Bullock, and Mrs. Robert Ladd Gifford. Minnie Barton was the second woman to join the Los Angeles Police Department and also founded the Barton Home for girls in 1917. Gloria Swanson was an actress best known for her role as Norma Desmond in the film Sunset Boulevard. James E. Davis James Edgar Davis was Los Angeles Chief of Police from 1926–1931 and from 1933-1939.
