Description:
Chevalier de Saint-Georges was a champion fencer, classical composer, virtuoso violinist, and conductor of the leading symphony orchestra in Paris. Born in Guadeloupe, he was the son of George Bologne de Saint-Georges, a wealthy planter, and Nanon, his African slave. During the French Revolution, Saint-Georges was colonel of the Légion St.-Georges, the first all-black regiment in Europe, fighting on the side of the Republic. Today the Chevalier de Saint-Georges is best remembered as the first classical composer of African ancestry. [Wikipedia]

Plaque on stone pedestal near the Nate Harrison homestead, Mount Palomar (Calif.), circa 1910

Description:
Nate Harrison was born in the American South during the 1820s or 30s. He migrated to California during the Gold Rush, eventually settled on Mount Palomar. He was the first African American homesteader in the area and occupied his homestead from approximately 1856 to 1919. His homestead included a cabin, a patio and an orchard. He had many visitors, and ran a small cottage industry raising sheep, and processing wool and animal hides.

Edwin Lucius Jefferson was a 1931 graduate of the University of Southern California Law School. He was the first African American judge west of the Mississippi when he was appointed to the L.A. Municipal Court in 1941, and the first African American Justice for the California 2nd Appellate Court of Appeals. Jefferson was a civic leader, who in 1943 served on a committee to improve the housing situation for minorities in Los Angeles.

Phillips Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Los Angeles, 1963

Description:
Phillips Temple C. M. E. Church was established in 1915. The Christian Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church is a historically black denomination within the broader context of Methodism. It's also occasionally considered to be a mainline denomination. The group was organized on December 16, 1870 in Jackson, Tennessee, by several black ministers, with the full support of their white sponsors. They called this fellowship the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America, which it remained until their successors adopted the current name in the 1950s.

Photograph of a petition signed in 1894 by the teachers at Sacramento High School. They protested the ousting of Sarah Mildred Jones from her position as "Principal [of] Fremont Primary School, Sacramento, Ca." for reasons of "Race Prejudice." The petition was successful; Jones remained principal until her retirement in 1914.

Pearl Hinds Roberts was the widow of Frederick Madison Roberts, an American newspaper owner and editor, educator and business owner. He became a politician, the first known man of African American descent elected to the California State Assembly. He has been honored as the first person of African American descent to be elected to public office among the states on the West Coast.

Pearl W. Hinds Roberts was the daughter of Lucy and Wiley Hinds, owner of one of the largest cattle ranches in California. She graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She was a member of the Electoral College in 1952. She was married to Frederick M. Roberts, the first black Assemblyman elected to state office west of the Mississippi.

The Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The airport was designed jointly by Paul R. Williams, Pereira & Luckman Associates, and Welton Becket & Associates. The Theme Building was probably not designed by Williams. It has an observation deck, restaurant (closed in 2013), employee cafeteria and a bank. It became an instant landmark in Los Angeles which symbolized the city’s embrace of the 20th century space age.

Paul Robeson in the role of Othello, New York, 1943-1944

Description:
Paul Robeson, was an American bass baritone, concert artist and stage and film actor who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political activism. Robeson was one of the most influential participants in the Harlem Renaissance. Robeson brought Negro spirituals into the American mainstream. His theatrical performances have been recognized as the first to display dignity for black actors and pride in African heritage, and he was among the first artists to refuse to play live to segregated audiences. Robeson earned international acclaim for his lead role in Othello, for which he won the Donaldson Award for Best Acting Performance (1944).

Description:
Dr. Vada Somerville (born Vada Jetmore Watson) of Pomona graduated from USC, married dentist John Alexander Somerville (1912), was the first African American woman and the second African American person to graduate from USC School of Dentistry (1918), and was the first African American woman certified to practice dentistry in the state of California. She was a civil rights activist, highly involved in several civic and community organizations.

Parkridge Country Club, Corona, 1925-1928

Description:
Parkridge Country Club in Corona opened in 1925. It had one of the best golf courses in California. Under financial stress by 1927, it was sold to three African American businessmen from Los Angeles, including Journee White (a wealthy real estate businessman) and Eugene C. Nelson (a physician). The Ku Klux Klan burned a cross on the front lawn, white club members sued the previous white owner, and by 1929 the black buyers were forced to withdraw their bid. It became a sanitarium and was demolished in the 1960’s to make way for the Cresta Verde Golf Course and housing development.

Jose Cesario Moreno and his wife Maria Guadalupe Gertrudis Perez were from Real del Rosario, Sinaloa. They were among 12 families from Rosario recruited in 1781 to settle in Los Angeles. Moreno served as a Los Angeles Regidor; he is buried at Mission San Gabriel.
