Arnold, es de varios cantos entonados en quechua y aymara en la fiesta de Navidad, en un festival en la estancia de Livichuco: 1. El Termino (Tukuy qawusaruna), acompañado por una tropa de guitarras grandes. 2. Sarita (Way siway Saritay) que cantan los de la estancia Tarpata, del ayllu Qallapa. 3. SPANISH: Leocadio Choque Poma graba la historia de Villa Belén y sus necesidades actuales: 1. Villa Belén pertenece a la marka y los ayllus de Qaqachaka. 2. La escuela cuenta con un maestro y sus autoridades o directiva, que incluyen el alcalde escolar, presidente, junta auxiliar y agente auxiliar. Qaqachaka history - reading of the leaflet "Tata Inti" - 020

Description:

SPANISH: Denise Y. Arnold realiza una grabación de la lectura del folleto titulado "Tata Inti" N°1, Ediciones Chunka, de abril 1991, escrito por Ahutu Qispi Wara. El documento es la historia en larga duración sobre Qaqachaka, desde el periodo de los incas hasta la actualidad. Ella inicia leyendo la parte 2 que trata sobre los incas y la relación con la familia Maraza, como Inca Tata Maraza, y así de la importancia de ellos en la historia de Qaqachaka. También menciona a la familia Chuqi (o Choque) y la distribución de tierras, y la lucha por la tierra durante la Colonia por los Maraza, y su participación en la Guerra del Chaco. Esta lucha por la propiedad de la tierra fecha desde inicios del siglo XX. Ella también menciona la lucha territorial entre Jukumani y Laymi.<br>ENGLISH: Denise Y. Arnold makes a recording of the reading of the pamphlet titled "Tata Inti" N°1, Chunka Editions, from April 1991, written by Ahutu Qispi Wara. The document is the long-term history of Qaqachaka, from the period of the Incas to the present. She starts by reading part 2 which deals with the Incas and the relationship with the Maraza family as Inca Tata Maraza, and so of their importance in the history of Qaqachaka. She also mentions the Chuqi (or Choque) family and the distribution of land, the fight for land during the Colony by the Marazas, and their participation in the Chaco War. This struggle for land ownership is from the beginning of the 20th century. She also mentions the fights between Jukumani and Laymi.

La mula y el burro son animales de carga (jucha q’ipi). La oveja (uwija) sirve de ofrenda para los cerros (qullu). Las gallinas (wallpa) so consideradas alimento que proporcionan fuerza. Las llamas (qarwa) tienen varios usos, por ejemplo, como alimento, de carga, de ofrenda y son consideradas de buena suerte. Las mujeres eran denominadas pongo y los hombres mit'ani. Las pongo realizaban las siguientes funciones: traer agua (uma wayuña), cocinar (phayaña), tejer textiles a mano (sawuña). Los hombres se dedicaban a los cultivos (yapuña) y a las minas. 2. El pago de la tasa (kuyakachi) en los ayllus del Norte de Potosí. 3. Que los hacendados de esta región fueron Emilio Tapia, hacendado de Sakana, Zacarías Intija, Félix Fernández, hacendado de Churitaka, Enrique Masica, hacendado de Tambo K’asa y Luciano Urista, y estos hacendados maltrataban a los pongos y mit'anis. La historia de Potosí conocido antiguamente como Jóven Potosí (Wayna Putusi) y que era una sola comunidad dividido en Alaxsaya, Majasaya, Urinsaya y Qawiqisaya, en el período inca. Que los criollos y mestizos (q’ara) dividieron el Alto Perú en departamentos. Potosí es conocido como Putusi o Phutuxchi, y los ayllus más conocidos son Macha y Laymi, y cada uno tiene dos "hermanos". Laymi que está dividido en dos hermanos: Puraka Laymi y Laymi Ayllu. Se prepara primero el altar-mesa con varios ingredientes, como maíz blanco (janq’u tunqu), maíz amarillo (q’illu tunqu), canela y azúcar, entre otros. Además, deben colocar singani en ollitas para cada cerro. Como parte importante de la ofrenda está la sangre de una oveja o llama blanca, que se mezcla con harina de maíz amarillo y maíz blanco (chapu phiri) que se da a los cerros antes de que salga el sol, cuando se empieza las libaciones o ch’alla para tener buena suerte (surti) durante todo el año. Este rito debe ir acompañado de hojas de coca (inal mama). La ofrenda a la Pachamama se da al mismo tiempo que a los cerros. También preparan un altar-mesa para pedir por los animales, cuando se menciona a ciertos santos como San Francisco y San Antonio. En este rito, las mujeres cantan a los animales (warat'aña) como las ovejas y llamas, y piden para el dinero, el maíz, la papa y otros productos agrícolas. Jueves es el día de los angelitos o las almas de los niños, el viernes es el día de las almas de personas mayores y se reza por ellos, y el sábado es el despacho de las almas cuando se reza, se come y se bebe. Comenta que se deben realizar libaciones (ch’alla) para el Pueblo de la Gloria, Gloria marka, para la sepultura, para la esquina del alma, para todo (taqpacha) y para el clima (ch'isi). El brindis para los angelitos se dirige para el monte (muntitaki). Durante esta festividad se debe pedir bendiciones para el lado derecho (kupi) y para despachar a las almas se hace libaciones por el lado izquierdo (ch’iqa). Para la llegada de las almas se debe preparar su ropa, preparar platos como quinua cocida con leche (p’isqi), quinua graneada y cocida sin sal (phisara), haba cocida (muti) y carne (aycha). Describe el cultivo de las papas en el lugar frío y alto de Qaqachaka, que se llama alarama. Entre la variedad de papas están la papa larga con muchos ojos (axawiri) y la papa blanca amarga (luk’i) que se usa para hacer la papa deshidratada llamada ch'uñu. Comenta que en alarama siempre se produce esta variedad. Comenta también que en esta región el pájaro (chiwuta jamach’i) que anuncia si la producción será buena o no. También menciona que cuando el zorro (liq’uchi) hace excremento (jama) sobre la siembra está será buena. Cuenta que la papa imilla es una variedad de tubérculo harinoso (p’ujsa) que se produce para comercializar, como la papa de varios colores (pilpintu) que son grandes. En manqharana, el lugar más abajo en Qaqachaka y más cálido, se produce todo tipo de papa, además de oca (apilla) y lisasa, tubérculo amarillento con ojos (isañu). Arnold first about the cultivation of potatoes (ch'uqi) and their varieties. He describes the potatoes cultivated in the cold heights of Qaqachaka, called alarama. Among the variety of potatoes are the long potato with many eyes (axawiri) and the bitter white potato (luk'i) used for making ch'uñu. He comments that this product is always produced in those heights. He also comments that in this region the bird called chiwuta jamach'i announces whether the year's production will be good or not. He also mentions that when the fox (liq'uchi) makes excrement (jama) on the crops, it will be a good year. Narra que en los chullpares se encuentran lagartos (jararankhu), serpientes (katari) y ratones (achaku). Sabe escuchar que en las tumbas antiguas (chullpa uta) se ha encontrado dinero y lo sacaban (apsuña). Menciona que en los chullpas se encuentra gente seca. Que los padrinos son considerados padres espirituales, en que la madrina (sutis malasa) y el padrino (sutis talasa) son los parientes del espíritu y los padres son solo de cuerpo (janchi). Durante el rito del matrimonio la pareja (paris paluma) recibe la bendición del cura (tata kura) quien los une en una sola persona. Los padrinos son quienes amonestan cuando hay faltas (jucha) y les aconsejan (amuyasiña). 2. Que al momento de hacer ofrendas (liwaña) a los cerros de Phiri Phiri o Turu no se echa sal (jayu), y durante esos días se come sin sal. En cambio, al ingresar a la iglesia, todo tiene sal, y se come con sal, porque es una forma de ahuyentar a los espíritus malos (saxra). Por eso se dice que se tiene dos corazones, uno que come sal y el otro no. El consumir sal implica tener fuerza (ch’ama laqa). La Pachamama habla con la coca, encargándole. Comenta que el esposo de la coca es la lejía (llijt'a), también considerado el yerno de la Pachamama. La Pachamama es la que bautiza a los cerros (qullu) por medio de las nubes (qinaya), cubriéndolos con nieve (khunu). A la Pachamama ni a los cerros se debe ofrendar con sal (jayumpi) porque trae la mala suerte (qhinchhayaña) en la producción, en los rebaños y a uno mismo. Las apachetas son lugares construidos recientemente. Comenta que la Pachamama cada vez va dando menos porque ya no se acuerdan de ella. Por eso envía granizos (chhijchhi) a los alimentos (juyra), sequias (wañantaña), y lluvias (jallu) que causan inundaciones. La ofrenda a la Pachamama debe llevar confites de rojo y blanco (aljinika wila janq’u), canela, menta amarga o q’uwa, y doce hojas de coca (tunkapän kuka). Antes le colocaban con más frecuencia, pero ahora se han olvidado que ella es quien nos da de comer y beber porque somos sus hijos (wawa). SPANISH: Mauricia Mamani es entrevistada por Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold sobre el clima del Qaqachaka y sus consecuencias. En la estación de lluvia (jallu), cuando la neblina (urpu) es de color negro, lloverá fuerte, pero si la niebla es de color blanco, no lloverá. Cuando llueve mucho, el agua entra a los sembradíos (yapu) haciendo perder la siembra. Comenta que el granizo (janq’u jallu) cae cuando muere un niño sin nombre y sin ser sepultados. También existe la idea de que cuando uno mata una serpiente (katari) debe ser enterrado, sino provocará una fuerte granizada. En relación a la nevada (khunu), dice que se dan entre las fiestas de San Pedro en abril y Guadalupe en septiembre, y en San Juan en junio cuando las montañas se llenan de nieve. Por las noches, en tiempo de lluvia, caen los rayos (q'aw q'aw), y antes había la idea de que no debía criarse perros negros ni rojos porque llamaban (jawusaña) al rayo, como hacen también los animales con dos colas o dos cabezas, algo entre la víbora (katari) y el lagarto (jararankhu), que atraían el relámpago. Menciona que son tres los relámpagos: San Felipe, San Gerónimo y Santiago Tatala. El rayo que le cae a las personas le da conocimiento (amuyaña) y se convierten en sabios (yatiri). Pero debe caerles tres veces: con el primer rayo muere partido, con el segundo lo une y con el último, revive. Nadie debe espectar este suceso para que la persona viva. En los tejidos, el rayo está expresado con el diseño de zigzag (link’u link’u). Finalmente comenta sobre el viento (wayra o saxra wayra) que levanta piedras, tierra y el arco iris (kurami) y las enfermedades asociados con estos.<br>ENGLISH: Mauricia Mamani is interviewed by Juan de Dios Yapita and Denise Y. Arnold about the climate of Qaqachaka and its consequences. In the rainy season (jallu timpu), if the fog (urpu) is black it will rain hard, but if the fog is white it will not rain. When it rains a lot, the water enters the fields (yapu) causing the crops to fail. She comments that hail (janq'u jallu) falls when an unbaptized child dies and they are not buried properly. There is also the idea that when one kills a snake (katari) it must be buried or else it will cause a heavy hailstorm. In relation to snowfall (khunu) she says this occurs between the feasts of San Pedro in April and Guadalupe in September, and in San Juan in June when the mountains are covered with snow. At night, in rainy weather, lightning strikes (q'aw q'aw), and there was the belief that black or red dogs should not be raised because they called up (jawusaña) lightning, or that animals that had two tails or two heads, resembling something between a viper (katari) and a lizard (jararankhu), attracted lightning. She mentions that there are three kinds of lightning: San Felipe, San Geronimo and Santiago Tatala. The lightning that strikes people gives them knowledge (amuyaña) and they become wise men (yatiri). But the lightning must fall on them three times; with the first strike a person is split apart, with the second they are united again, and with the last the person revives. No one should expect a the person to live in these experiences. In weavings, lightning is expressed by zigzag designs (link'u link'u). She finally comments on the wind (wayra or saxra wayra) that raises stones, and diseases associated with the earth and the rainbow (kurami).

Describe el procedimiento del secado (wansuyuña) del haba, y cómo se debe soplar (wayrayaña) el afrecho (jipi) para alimentar a los burros y otros animales. Para el cultivo de haba (jawasa) se debe barbechar antes de sembrar (jatu usquña) y la semilla germina a la semana. Menciona que en Qaqachaka hay sola una variedad el maíz (tunqu) llamado ch’isiwayu, habiendo más variedad en los valles de likina: con el maíz blanco (janq’u), rojo (wila), gris (uqi), mosca (chhichhillankha) y el periquito (piriqitu). Después de la cosecha, se debe hacer una clasificación de los productos: uno para el comercio, otro para el consumo y otro para la semilla. For the cultivation of broad beans (jawasa) the land must be fallowed then sown (jatu usquña) and the seed germinates in a week. He mentions that in Qaqachaka there is only one variety of corn (tunqu) called ch'isiwayu, but that there is more variety in likina, including white corn (janq'u), red (wila), gray (uqi), fly corn (chhichhillankha) and parakeet (piriqitu). After the harvest, a classification of the products must be made: one for trading, another for consumption and another for seed. He comments on the potatoes (ch'uqi) called "mother" (llallawa mamala), and the variety of "girl" potatoes (imilla): including black girl (ch'iyara imilla), bicolor girl (allqa imilla), beige girl (paqu imilla) and condor girl (kuntur imilla), among others. Los mayordomos o awatiris son aquellos de Mama Kapitana, Mama Ch’uri y Tata Animasa, un cargo que ya ha desaparecido, el Fisca que solo aparece en Tentación, y el mayordomo de Candelaria para la festividad de Mama Candelaria. Otra autoridad importante es el Líder del ayllu (Jilanqu), luego está el auxiliar de Corregidor de la escuela y el otro es el Agente a cargo de cuidar los sembradíos (yapu). Don Enrique comenta que el cambio (turkaña) de las principales autoridades se da cada año el 1 de enero en la fiesta del Niño en la plaza principal de Qaqachaka. Las autoridades salientes (mirq’i) entregan los símbolos de mando, por ejemplo el poncho, los lazos y sellos, e inventarios a sus sucesores o recibientes (katukisiri). Comenta que los líderes de cada ayllu y los alcaldes reciben la vara vieja (awki), conocida como bastón (thujru), y que hacen libaciones o ch’alla en sus casas los que reciben estas varas. The mayordomos or awatiris are those of Mama Kapitana, Mama Ch'uri y Tata Animasa, a cargo that has now disappeared, the Fiscal who only appears at the Temptation of Our Lord, and that of Mama Candelaria for her feast. The people and the yatiri each have their own ways and coca is the instrument that gives the answers to the wise. 3. SPANISH: Doña Nicolasa Ayca Mamani es entrevistada por Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold sobre la Fiesta de la Cruz al Tata Wayna Milita y las tareas de los pasantes con los diferentes preparativos para esa fiesta, como también el significado de las otras fiestas de la Mama Candelaria y la fiesta de Milagros. Cuenta del rol que debían cumplir los pasantes de la fiesta para Tata Wayna Milita. Relata también acerca de la ayuda que hicieron varios hombres y mujeres a los pasantes, denominada "ramatha", en la que todos iban cantando (kirkiña) y bailando con los conjuntos musicales de tarqueada y pinquillada, haciendo el recorrido por uno de los lugares principales denominado "Planicie del joven" (Waynapata); este se realizaba hasta que todos estén ebrios (machantata). Ella indica que la fiesta duraba dos a tres días; el primer día se denominaba Jach’a uru, el segundo día iIija y el tercer día Chuqhuru. Finalmente, ella describe las fiestas de la Candelaria, de la Cruz y de los Milagros. Arnold about the feast of the Holy Cross held in honor of Tata Wayna Milita and the tasks of the feast sponsors, as well as the meaning of other feasts for Mama Candelaria, and the feast of Miracles. She relates the role that the feast sponsors had to play at the feast for Tata Wayna Milita. She also describes the help or "accompaniment" that various men and women performed for the feast sponsors. This was called "ramatha", where everyone sang (kirkiña) and danced, accompanied by musicians playing flutes of different types (tarqueada and pinkillada). Desde pequeños se aprende a cantar (kirkiña o warart'aña) para las fiestas de los santos locales. 2. Que ella aprendió a tejer (sawuña) sola y que en el camino le fue enseñando los diseños (saltas) su tía paterna (ipala) Gendarmita Ayca. Entre los textiles que ella tejió fueron la manta o awayu y las prendas rectangulares de sobrefalda (unkhu) para uso cotidiano y ritual. Hizo diseños de rombo (uyu uyu), el zigzag (link’u link’u) y otros. Aprendió la técnica del teñido con añilina traía desde Uncía, en Potosí. Comenta que su abuela teñía con hojas de plantas (k’ichiña), al usar espinos (ch’api) para el color carmesí (panti), y flores del arbusto espinoso axrawayu para teñir el amarillo. En tiempos antiguos las abuelas Pascuala Choque y Manuelita Alejandro teñían con tola (t’ula), un arbusto que crece en las lomas para una gama del color verde. 3. Arnold, comments on the following topics: 1. From a young age, one learns to sing (kirkiña or warart'aña) for the feasts of local saints. 2. SPANISH: María Ayca Colque es entrevistada por Juan de Dios Yapita and Denise Y. Arnold. Ella describe cómo se ha traído al Tata Quri desde el cerro local Phiri Phiri, y cuando llegó a la iglesia sonó la campana de la torre denominada Padre (Tatala). A este santo patrono había que cambiarle (turkaña) de ropa y vestirle (isiyaña), y colocarle con dos velas, cintas, cuñar (quña) con algodón suave a cada lado (piñuqa), un poncho, dos otros ponchos, entre otros objetos, y luego hay que envolverle (k’iruña) en un rebozo (jant’aku), doce mantas (awayu) y con dos ganchos engancharle (t’irjaña), luego hay que envolverle como una piedra con fuerza. Luego hay que hacer libaciones o ch’alla diciéndole sobre tu mes. Comenta que cuando se pasó por primera vez la festividad de Tata Quri, era como un matrimonio y una forma de salvar el alma (qhispiyaña). Cuenta que este santo local es poderoso, milagroso y que vive en una roca, por lo que proporciona fuerza para que las luchas rituales que ocurren (tinku). Narra que sabe ir y entrar a Jukumani con pantalón amarillo (q’illu pantaluni) y cuerno amarillo (q’illu waxrani). Describe los danzantes de Tata Quri llamados moscas de oro (quri chhichhillanka), y cómo se entonan canciones (kirki) y en sus vestimentas llevan alas, y sostienen un cuchillo que simboliza un instrumento para defender de los malos espíritus a Tata Quri. Arnold. She describes how they brought Tata Quri down from Mount Phiri Phiri, and when he arrived at the church the bell of the tower called Father (Tatala) rang. This patron saint had to be changed (turkaña) and dressed (isiyaña), and placed with two candles, ribbons, a wedge (quña) with soft cotton on each side (piñuqa), a poncho, two other ponchos, among other objects, and then you have to wrap him (k'iruña) in a decorated mantle (jant'aku), twelve mantles (awayu), and hook it with two pins (t'irjaña), then you have to wrap him tightly like a stone. Then you have to make libations or ch'alla telling him about your month. She comments that when Tata Quri's feast was passed for the first time, it was like a marriage and a way of saving the soul (qhispiyaña). SPANISH: Juana Colque Ayca habla con Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold sobre los santos locales de Santa Dolores (Mamala Tulurisa) y San Juan. La fiesta de Mama Dolores y de Animasa Tala se pasaba en Pascua y era por turnos; le correspondía a cada ayllu menor por año, pero con el tiempo se ha perdido esta fiesta. Se dice que San Juan es la pareja de Santa Dolores, por eso son esposos (chachawarmi). Le han contado que Mama Dolores sabe traer en Pascua papa (ch’uqi), lisa y oca (apilla) para que no haya hambruna, y por eso había que sahumarle con menta amarga (q'uwa) durante la fiesta de Pascua en medio de los sembradíos, diciéndole "Madre Virgen (Wirjin Mamala), yo te invito para que nos proporciones una buena cosecha". En relación a la festividad de San Juan, comenta que solo participaban mujeres y que llegaban de todos lados. Ellas se reunían dentro de la iglesia donde masticaban coca (akhulli) y realizaban libaciones o ch’alla diciendo: "Para San Juan, para Santa Dolores, para las crías de ovejas (chitataki), para los burros (wurutaki), para la paja (wichhutaki), para la salud de las crías de ovejas (chita salurataki), para la salud de las nuevas crías (machaqa qallu salurapataki), para sus pastores (awatiripataki) y para el pasto (paqurapataki)". Esta festividad que se ha perdido con el tiempo. 2. El pasante de la fiesta de Tentación o carnaval es la autoridad llamada Fiscal. Los requisitos para asumir este cargo son ser originario y propietario de extensas tierras (uraqi) y este no necesita estar casado para ser pasante de la fiesta.<br>ENGLISH: Juana Colque Ayca talks with Juan de Dios Yapita and Denise Y. Arnold about the local saints: Santa Dolores (Mama Tulurisa) and San Juan. The feast of Mama Dolores and of Animasa Tala was held at Easter in turns, as it corresponded to different minor ayllus each year; over time this feast has been lost. It is said that San Juan is the partner of Santa Dolores, and that is why they are married (chachawarmi). People told her that Mama Dolores knows how to produce potatoes (ch'uqi), lisa and oca (apilla) at Easter so that there is no famine; that is why they had to burn bittermint (q'uwa) during Easter in the middle of the fields saying "Virgin Mother (Wirjin Mamala), I invite you to provide us with a good harvest". In relation to the feast of San Juan, she comments that only women participated and that they came from everywhere. They met inside the church where they chewed coca (akhulli) and made libations or ch'alla saying: "For Saint John, for Saint Dolores, for raising sheep (chitataki), for the donkey (wurutaki), for straw (wichhutaki), for the health of the young sheep (chita salurataki), for the health of the new offspring (machaqa qallu salurapataki), for their shepherds (awatiripataki) and for the pastures (paqurapataki)". SPANISH: Enrique Espejo Sepera guía a Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold en un viaje a la montaña de Jujchu. Llegan a Yanamani donde encuentran casas de paja, un corral de llamas y a las 9 de la mañana la gente allá empieza a sacar a sus animales para pastar. Sus patios son bien construidos. En el camino ellos ven zorros (liq’uchi, sirka, anu o atuja). Descansan (sañama) en K’ultamaya y luego llegan a Jisk'a K’ultamaya donde hay casas construidas de piedra. Pasan por Jujchu Pallqa, un lugar donde hay una muralla de piedra construida por los diferentes ayllus para que no se escape los animales de rebaño (uywa). Llegan a las alturas de la montaña Jujchu, donde las madres (mamalas) y padres (tatalas) realizan libaciones o ch’alla. Se menciona que esta montaña también lo llaman Jujchu Niña María, y es considerada una mujer principal (t’alla), de donde viene el agua. Desde cerca de la cima ellos observan un rebaño de llamas (qarwa) y don Enrique comenta que se les nombra a las llamas según el tipo de color (samiri) de su fibra y el patrón de los colores en su cuerpo, por ejemplo si es un color pixeleado (tiwtira), o una llama manchada en el lomo (wankhalli), o del color de un ganso andino (wallata), o el color de la gaviota andina (qiñwachu), entre otros colores.<br>ENGLISH: Enrique Espejo Sepera guides Juan de Dios Yapita and Denise Y. Arnold on a journey towards Mount Jujchu. They arrive at Yanamani where they find straw houses, a corral for llamas and at 9 in the morning the people there begin to take out their animals to graze. Their patios are well built. Along the way they see foxes (liq'uchi, sirka, anu or atuja). They rest (sañama) in K'ultamaya and then arrive at Jiska K'ultamaya where there are houses built of stone. They go through Jujchu Pallqa, a place where there is a stone wall built by the different ayllus so that the herd animals (uywa) do not escape. They arrive on the slopes of Mount Jujchu, where both women (mamalas) and men (tatalas) perform libations or ch'alla. Don Enrique mentioned that this mountain is also called Jujchu Girl María, and it is considered an outstanding woman (t'alla) where the water comes out from. From high up they observe the herds of llamas (qarwa) and don Enrique comments that the llamas are named according to the patterns of color of the fiber on their body, thought to come from the stone breath spirits (samiri) on the hillsides, for example a pixelated color (tiwtira), a llama spotted on the back (wankhalli), one like an Andean goose color (wallata), or an Andean seagull color (qiñwachu), among others.

Qaqachaka textiles - interview with Asunta Arias Tarque, continuation of 008 - 009

SPANISH: Asunta Arias Tarque es entrevistada por Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold. Nota la similitud entre los diseños (salta) de los vasos de madera (qiru) para tomar cerveza (k’usa) y los diseños textiles, y cómo cada uno de ellos tiene un nombre como zigzag (link’u link’u), rombo (uyu uyu), bifurcado (pallqa pallqa) o sendas (thakhi thakhi). Luego ella describe el proceso de producción para la elaboración de textiles: primero lo de esquilar (yawiña) a la oveja o llama, de seleccionar la fibra (t'arwa), lavarla (t’axsiña) y hacerla secar, hilarla (qapuña), teñirla (tiniña) y retorcer (k’anthiña) las dos hebras hiladas, y finalmente tejer a mano en un telar (tilar sawuña). Menciona que durante la selección de la fibra ya se determina qué textiles se va a elaborararn. Arnold. She notes the similarity between the designs (salta) of the wooden cups (qiru) they use to drink beer (k'usa) and the designs of textiles, and how each has a name such as zigzag (link'u link'u), rhombus (uyu uyu), forked (pallqa pallqa) or pathways (thakhi thakhi). She then describes the production process for the elaboration of textiles: first shearing (yawiña) the sheep and llamas, then selecting the fiber (t'arwa), washing (t'axsiña) and drying it, spinning the fiber (qapuña), then dyeing (tiniña) it, twisting or plying the thread (k'anthiña) from two spun strands, and finally weaving it by hand on a loom (tilar sawuña). She mentions that during the selection of the fiber the weaver already knows what textile will be made. For example, she comments that ropes (wiskha) made with fine fiber are used to lead donkeys and to handle barley, whereas rough ropes (ch'awara) are made to tie on (chinuña) donkeys, for belts (t'isnu) and for the earrings (phaqara) they put on the tips of the ears of animals such as sheep and llamas (qarwa).

SPANISH: Enrique Espejo Sepera guía a Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold a las colinas de Qaqachaka para mostrarle las illas llamada Aywir Qala o "Piedras que Andan", donde se realizan ritos. En el camino va describiendo el paisaje, y la flora y la fauna del lugar. Ellos ven una flor de cacto con semilla de color carmín (ayrampu), un arbusto espinoso (kayñi ch'api) y la flor para lavar (t’axa t’axa) que cumple la función del jabón. Al llegar a las colinas, ellos encuentran el Aywiri Qala, y acullican coca (akhulliña) allí. Don Enrique explica que es un lugar donde se realizan libaciones durante la fiesta de carnaval y que el sábado después de la fiesta de comadres, bailan y cantan. También menciona que en el mes de agosto dan ofrendas en este lugar. Comenta que cada estancia tiene su propio cerro guardián menor (awatiri). Along the way he describes the landscape, and the flora and fauna of the place. They see a cactus flower with carmine-colored seeds (ayrampu), a thorny bush (kayñi ch'api), and the flower used for washing (t'axa t'axa) that performs the function of soap. Upon reaching the hills, they find the Aywiri Qala, and they chew coca (akhulliña) there. Don Enrique explains that libations are made in that place during Carnival and that on the Saturday, after the feast of Comadres, they dance and sing. He mentions that in the month of August they make offerings in this place. He comments that each hamlet has its minor guardian mountain (awatiri). The offerings given (chillaña) are white corn, cinnamon, sugar, tumeric, and a llama fetus (sullu qallu) as a way to invite them with food.

Describe las primeras palabras que pronuncian los niños y las niñas, y las labores que van realizando a medida que van creciendo. Las primeras palabras en pronunciar son comida (lala), mamá (mama) y papá (tatay). Los padres o personas mayores hacen parar a los niños o niñas (pininicha), hacen que beben (k’uña wawa), cuando mueven la cabeza lo ponen con firmeza (p’iqi wayti), y le ayudan a da los primeros pasos (k’atati o ump’asi), y a pararse (thurt’iwa). Al primer año empiezan a pararse, y también empiezan a pronunciar las primeras palabras. A los dos años los niños y las niñas pronuncian gente (jaqi), cuando no se acercan a las personas (jiwutasi). A los tres años ya hablan y caminan, pero no todos. Entre los 4 y 5 años al niño (changulla) y a la niña (palachitu), empiezan a ir a la escuela. SPANISH: Lucía Quispe Choque habla con Juan de Dios Yapita y Denise Y. Arnold sobre cómo las parteras (qaquri) son las especialistas encargadas de controlar el embarazo de las mujeres en Qaqachaka y el siguiente parto. Ellas saben, al agarrar la mano de la mujer, la posición del feto. Según su diagnóstico les frotan (qaquña) con distintas técnicas de masaje o les sacuden (thalaña) en una manta femenina (awayu) o poncho para corregir la posición del feto, y para que su embarazo no se complique. También suelen saber si será varón o mujer. Comenta que durante el embarazo no se debe manejar cosas pesadas, ni hilar ni envolver fiba, ni tejer, para que no nazca él bebé (wawa) enredado con el cordón umbilical en su cuello. En relación al parto comenta que algunas mujeres dan a luz (wawachaña) rápido y otras no. Los bebés que nacen de pie son considerados brujas o brujos (layqa), y a ellos no se les puede decir nada y suelen maldecir a otras personas. Menciona que hay tres tipos de predisposición o "caminos" de la mujer en relación con el parir. A unas las llaman camino de vicuña (wari kamiru), a otras camino del perro (anu kamiru) y a otras camino de gente legítima (jaq’i lijitimu). Arnold about how midwife specialists (qaquri) are in charge of controlling the pregnancy of women in Qaqachaka, and the subsequent childbirth. They know by holding a woman's hand the position of the baby. Hay mujeres que dan a luz rápido (anu qamiri) a otras le cuesta. Habla de los brebajes que deben tomar (umantaña) los hombres y mujeres que no quieren tener hijos (allqayiri), que son, por ejemplo, kinturaya, mula sapatu y lana roja (wila ch’ankha). Para tener hijos (wawachayaña) se toma agua ardiente, lap’i, willkaparilla y qinturaya. Pero algunas veces la Pachamama suele designar la pareja. 3. Los contagios de enfermedades provocados por los hombres a sus esposas. 4. Los principios fundamentales de la gente andina desde el Tiempo de los Incas: el no robar (ama suwa), el no mentir (ama llulla) y el no ser flojo (ama qilla). 5. El degollado de las llamas (qarwa khari) al comienzo de la fiesta que realizan los pasantes. 4. Elvira (11 años) cuenta cinco cuentos tradicionales del lugar: el Cuento del León y el Ratón (Liwunanti Achakunti), el Cuento del Vendedor de locoto y la Muchacha (Lukutu aljirinti Imillanti), el Cuento de la Joven Rita (Rita palachu), el Cuento de las jóvenes (Qachunakata), y el Cuento de la Joven Víbora (Chuqir qamir Wirnita). 2.
