Clubs named after Dr. Francis Townsend to advocate for his old age pension plans, a precursor to Social Security. West was western divisional director of Townsend club; Litchenfels, state area officer; Highley, President of Los Angeles club; Biddlecom, member of national advisory board. Wives of Bliss and Highley also present.

J.H. Ozmun pictured in his Model 3 Holsman "Highwheeler" car after a cross-country trip, February 16, 1936.

Description:
John H. Ozmun is pictured in his "Highwheeler" Model 3 Holsman automobile, after completing a cross-country drive from Akron, Ohio to San Diego, California. The Holsman Model 3 was manufactured by the Holsman Automobile Company of Chicago, Illinois from 1902 to 1910. The car averaged twenty miles to the gallon during its trip to the West coast, a trip which took Ozmun twenty-six days. Ozmun later drove the Model 3 across the country again, to attend the 1939 World Fair in New York.

A line of radiator grilles, affixed with Studebaker's distinctive "lark in circle" hood ornament, at Studebaker's Los Angeles assembly plant in Vernon, Ca. Studebaker's Los Angeles plant was established in December of 1935, and its first completed car rolled off the assembly line on January 2, 1936. The plant closed on June 8, 1956.

The N.B. Scofield, the State Fisheries research ship. Captain Weseth and the N.B. Scofield recently returned from a 10 week survey trip of tropical tuna grounds and tuna migration habits. The ship sailed around the Galapagos Islands conducting the most extensive surveys ever done on the Pacific.

Ship amid smoke rising from the Markay oil tanker explosion in L.A. Harbor, Los Angeles, 1947

Description:
Ship amid the smoke in L.A. Harbor that is coming from fires that began when the Markay, an oil tanker owned by the Keystone Tankship Corp., exploded in the wee hours of the morning. The fire was fed by leaking gasoline and threatened at least five terminals in the harbor. At least 22 were injured and 9, possibly 12, people were killed. Damage was estimated at $10,000,000.

A crowd gathers to view the Tupolev ANT-25 flown by Mikhail Gromov, Andrei Yumashev, and Sergei Danilin from Moscow to a field outside San Jacinto, CA. The non-stop flight covered 6700 miles in 62 hours and 12 minutes, smashing the previous record for longest non-stop flight. July 14, 1937.

Description:
Seagull perched atop a pole at the bow of Tony Cornero’s newly refurbished gambling ship, the Bunker Hill (also known as the Lux), which was meant to operate offshore of Los Angeles. After the Bunker Hill’s opening night, however, Cornero and five of his aides were arrested on felony charges of criminal conspiracy to conduct gambling games and serve alcohol without a license. After his arrest, Cornero announced that he was ready to go to the United States Supreme court to keep the Bunker Hill running. Cornero was also “admiral” of the Rex, another gambling vessel which was forced to suspend operations in 1938.

Description:
Soviet aviators -- Col. Mikhail Gromov, pilot, Maj. Andrei Yumashev, co-pilot, and Capt. Sergei Danilin, navigator -- are welcomed after breaking the nonstop flight record, flying from Moscow and landing in San Jacinto, California, via the North Pole. The trio flew over 6700 miles in 62 hours and 12 minutes. The original plan was for the airplane to land in San Diego, but fog made landing the Russians’ large monoplane on San Diego’s short runways dangerous, and so the crew landed instead in the semi-desert fields surrounding San Jacinto.Pictured from left to right are Russian Consul Grigori Gokhman, Andrei Yumashev, and Sergei Danilin.
