Jose Facundo Reyes, grandson of Juan Francisco Reyes, circa 1865-1870

Description:
Juan Francisco Reyes, was a mulatto settler from Mexico who arrived shortly after the original settlers of 1781. In 1784, he received the Spanish Crown’s land-grant for Rancho Los Encinos. After selling it back, he received the land grant for Lompoc. He became the first alcalde (mayor) of the Los Angeles pueblo in 1790.

Equestrians in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, 1901

Description:
The Rose Parade, also known as the Tournament of Roses Parade, is part of "America's New Year Celebration" held New Year's Day. It was used to showcase California’s mild winter weather, and encourage migration from the East and the Midwest. Early precursors to the parade had horse-drawn carriages covered in flowers, followed by foot races, polo matches, and a game of tug-of-war on the town lot. Upon seeing the scores of flowers on display, one professor decided to suggest the name "Tournament of Roses." The first official parade was in 1895.

Description:
The Azusa Mission Church played a key role in the Pentecostal movement at the turn of the twenty century. Its founder, William J. Seymour, an African American preacher, presided over the revival meetings and led the development of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. The first meeting was on April 14, 1906. Worship at 312 Azusa St. was frequent and spontaneous with services going almost around the clock. The services were characterized by spiritual experiences accompanied with testimonies of physical healing, miracles, and speaking in tongues. Along with members of the Holiness Movement, services were attended by Baptists, Mennonites, Quakers, and Presbyterians and by persons of different races. Women held positions of leadership. After 1915, the church went into decline; following Seymour’s death, his wife continued to hold worship services until 1931.

Born Emma Barrett, Emma is listed as a step daughter living at 1244 El Molino in the 1900 census. In the Los Angeles city directories of 1901 and 1903, she is listed as a laundress living at 1242 El Molino in Los Angeles (now 1242 Kenmore Ave.). She married Robert James Boyd, who owned a barber shop in Los Angeles and they had four children: Barrett, Willis, Helen and Edward. Her first child, Barrett, was born in 1904 or 1905. By 1917 the family was living in Riverside, and Emma and Robert were still there in 1947.

Kenneth Hahn (1920–1997) was a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for forty years, from 1952 to 1992. Hahn was on the Los Angeles City Council from 1947 to 1952. He was an ardent supporter of civil rights throughout the 1960s, and met Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1961.

Description:
Gone Are the Days! Was a 1963 American comedy-drama film starring Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee and Godfrey Cambridge. It is based on the Broadway play Purlie Victorious, which was written by Davis. Purlie is set in an era when Jim Crow laws still were in effect in the American South. Its focus is on the dynamic, traveling preacher Purlie Victorious Judson, who returns to his small Georgia town hoping to save Big Bethel, the community's church, and emancipate the cotton pickers who work on oppressive Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee's plantation. With the assistance of Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, Purlie hopes to pry loose from Cotchipee an inheritance due his long-lost cousin and use the money to achieve his goals.

Carol Brice with her brother, Jonathan Brice, 1940-1960

Description:
Carol Brice was an African American contralto. She made her recital debut in 1943, that year becoming the first African-American to win the Walter Naumburg Award. Her concerts often featured the piano accompaniment of her brother, Jonathan Brice. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and received a bachelor of music degree at Talladega College in Alabama. Brice performed on Broadway in several well-known plays and musicals. Brice began teaching at the University of Oklahoma at Norman in 1974. She later founded the non-profit Cimarron Circuit Opera Company in Oklahoma with her husband, the baritone Thomas Carey.

Description:
The current Woodrow Wilson High School campus and buildings were designed by the renowned African American architect Paul R. Williams. It was an engineering challenge to excavate over one million cubic yards of earth to re-grade the hilltop and to use 3,500 tons of structural steel for the main buildings. The new Wilson High was the first LAUSD school to implement multi-floored buildings equipped with elevators and escalators to accommodate students with disabilities.

Description:
Nate Harrison was born in the American South during the 1820s or 30s. He migrated to California during the Gold Rush, eventually settled on Mount Palomar. He was the first African American homesteader in the area and occupied his homestead from approximately 1856 to 1919. His homestead included a cabin, a patio and an orchard. He had many visitors, and ran a small cottage industry raising sheep, and processing wool and animal hides.

Hamel Hartford Brookins was a bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church for 30 years and a civil rights activist. He helped start and was president of the United Civil Rights Council, which helped the black community recover from the Watts riots in 1965. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s he was an articulate, self-assured champion of black political empowerment.

Description:
Born on the island of St. Croix in the Danish West Indies in 1810, William Leidesdorff was the son of Danish sugar planter Alexander Leidesdorff and Anna Marie Sparks, a light-skinned woman of mixed race ancestry. In 1841 Leidesdorff settled in the Mexican village of Yerba Buena on San Francisco Bay. Over the next three years he became a successful merchant by making frequent trips between California, Mexico and Hawaii. In 1844 governor Micheltorena confirmed his land grant of 35,000 acres on the American River. Ranch Rio de Los Americanos was located near the spot where James Marshall discovered gold in January 1848. When Leidesdorff died unexpectedly in May 1848 he was buried inside Mission Dolores Church. Leidesdorff was a social, economic and political force in pre-gold rush San Francisco. When he was named the U.S. Vice Consul to Mexico in 1845, he became the nation’s first African American diplomat. He was elected to San Francisco’s first city council and its first school board in 1847. He built the first hotel, the first shipping warehouse, he operated the first steamboat on San Francisco Bay, and he laid out the first horse race track in California

Description:
James P. Beckwourth was an African-American mountain man, fur trader, and explorer who was born into slavery in Virginia in 1805. He was freed by his father (and master) and apprenticed to a blacksmith. As a young man, he moved to the American West first making connections with fur traders while on several land expeditions. He later lived with a village of Crow Native Americans. Beckwourth Pass, named in his honor, is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is the route that the Western Pacific Railroad used to cross the Sierra along their Feather River route. In August 1851, Beckwourth led the first intact wagon train. He also authored several books based on his life and times.

William Marcel "Buddy" Collette, was an African American jazz flautist, saxophonist, and clarinetist. In 1955, Buddy Collette became a founding member of the unusually instrumented chamber jazz quintet. The group gained national prominence and became one of the most influential West Coast jazz bands, synonymous with the laid back “cool jazz” of the 1950s.

Whaler Andrew Hicks, commanded by Captain William Shorey 1892-1902, alongside the dock, San Francisco, circa 1900

Description:
William T. Shorey was a late 19th-century American whaling ship captain. He was born in Barbados July 13, 1859 and spent his life at sea. He became the only black captain operating on the west coast of the United States in the late-1880s and 1890s. He obtained his certification in 1885. His whaling voyages were based out of San Francisco. The "John and Winthrop" was the only whaling ship in the world to be manned entirely by an African-American crew. Shorey retired from whaling in 1908 (Wikipedia). A street in west Oakland, where Shorey lived, is named after him.

Beckwourth Pass was discovered by James P. Beckwourth in 1850. Beckwourth developed Beckwourth Trail, traversing the pass, that was used by immigrants during the Gold Rush from 1851 to 1855. After that, the railroad came into use.

Description:
Charlie Nelson Gibson was born in Sacramento. His family moved to Oakland in the late 19th century. He was a redcap for the Southern Pacific Railroad from 1913-1954. He and his wife, Maude, had three daughters, Thelma, Lois, and Audrey. Gibson was a member of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Oakland, the Retired Railroad Men's Club, and several masonic lodges.

Description:
Elmer Bartlett was a highly acclaimed choir director and organist. Churches where he worked in include the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles. He received several awards in the course of his career including first prize for directing the Los Angeles AME's choir at a 1926 choir competition at the Hollywood Bowl. By 1940 he had moved to Elgin Illinois. He continued to direct choirs and play the organ for various A.M.E. churches.
