Description:
Santa Barbara Mission, exterior view of the bell tower from the NE following the earth quake. The upper portion of the bell tower has collapsed, and there are 2 cracks in the mid-section. A pile of rubble is visible on the left in front of the mission church and brickwork around a half dome on the right appears to have fallen away. The Mission is located at 2201 Laguna St.

Description:
Exterior view of the main facade of the Wilshire Boulevard Congregational Church. Signs on the church advertise a fundraising effort to prevent foreclosure, reading: "Save The Tower! $25,000 will do it. Will You Give It?" and "$50,000 Will Save This Church. Have You Given Your Bit for Religion? This Church belongs to Everybody." A tower-shaped sign to indicate the status of the fundraising effort is at the corner of the property. Other signs read: "Leila Castberg Preacher ... Church of Divine Power...Service, Sunday 7:30," and "May 6 The Miracle Church, Dr. Frank Dyer...Duled By Money...7:30."

The observatory appears to be in the final phase of completion, with the Astronomers Monument in place but with the parts of the walkway and the south end of E. Observatory Avenue unpaved.

Description:
Exterior view of the south face of the west telescope dome during landscaping and the final phase of construction with wheel barrows at the base of the tower beneath the exterior staircase to the roof. The original concrete surface is visible; consistent with other similar architecture of the day, the Observatory's concrete walls were left unpainted in the 1930s and 1940s.

Know Your City No.120 Entrance and façade of the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Los Angeles, 1956

Description:
St. Sophia Cathedral, located at 1324 South Normandy Ave., opened in 1952. It was commissioned by theater executive Charles R. Skouras. Designed by the firm Walker, Kalionzes & Klingerman, it is frequently attributed to Gus Kalionzes. Artist William Chavalas, who trained at the Academy of arts in Athens and was the artistic director at 20th Century Fox designing film sets and movie theaters, created the wall paintings and designed the stained glass. St. Sophia is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #120.

Description:
Oblique exterior view of the south faces of the west and central domes of the Griffith Observatory from the west-south-west during the final phase of construction. Signs of construction include a tall ladder resting against a buttress of the central dome, wheel barrows next to the west dome and a pile of dirt in the foreground. The original concrete surface is visible; consistent with other similar architecture of the day, the Observatory's concrete walls were left unpainted in the 1930s and 1940s.

Wilshire Boulevard Congregational Church with fundraising banners, Los Angeles, 1928

Description:
Exterior view of the Wilshire Boulevard Congregational Church at Plymouth and Wilshire Boulevards, just after the exterior scaffolding came down. Signs on the church advertised a fundraising effort to acquire donations to complete the construction project: "Save The Tower! $25,000 will do it. Will You Give It?" and "$50,000 Will Save This Church. Have You Given Your Bit for Religion? This Church belongs to Everybody" and "Save The Church In May, $50,000 Needed..." The edifice is now the home of the Wilshire United Methodist Church. The building was designed by the architectural firm Allison and Allison Architects.
