Description:
The Hotel Playa Ensenada opened on October 31, 1930. Later known as the Hotel Riviera del Pacifico, it was an elegant gambling casino developed by the North American Compañía Mexicana del Rosarito. The architect was Gordon E. Mayer. The hotel was closed and partly demolished in 1964. Partly rebuilt in 1978, the hotel was reopened as the Centro Social, Cívico y Cultural de Ensenada

Description:
This is a view of the historic Santa Monica City Hall looking north-east from the lawns leading up to the building. The words "City Hall" appear over the grand entrance which is lined with geometric patterned tiles. The American flag flutters in the wind against the sky. The building itself is considered one of the best examples of PWA (Public Works Administration) Moderne architecture, a combination of the Art deco and Art moderne characteristics. This style was popularised by depression-era architects, found mostly in buildings financed by the federal government.

Description:
View of the entrance to the historic Santa Monica city hall. A plaque to the left of the entrance [right of the photograph] reads, "Santa Monica City Hall... E. S. Gillette... T. D. Plumer... W. W. Milliken... 1938". Three young men stand at the entrance. The entrance is outlined by geometric patterned tiles that reflect Art deco characteristics. The tiles were crafted by the California-based Gladding, McBean Tile Company, a renowned company that shaped the modern ceramics industry. The city hall is itself said to be one of the best examples of PWA (Public Works Administration) Moderne architecture, a combination of Art deco and Art moderne characteristics. This style was popularized by depression-era architects, found mostly in buildings financed by the federal government.

Date range derived from a second negative sleeve housing visually and thematically similar images. The sleeve is an envelope post marked "Apr 25, 1937". In addition, both sleeves contained photographs of a newly built Santa Monica High School structure. One photograph is of a campus construction site. The photograph documents post-earthquake reconstruction that fell under the Works Project Administration (WPA). The project was completed in 1939. Description:
Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit was a 13,316-acre Spanish land grant given by Spanish Governor José Joaquín de Arrillaga in 1804 to José Bartolomé Tapia. In 1892 Frederick Hastings Rindge and May Knight Rindge, purchased the rancho. In 1926, the Marblehead Land Company, formed by May Knight Rindge, made a $6 million deal with Harold G. Ferguson to develop the La Costa area (between Las Flores Canyon and Carbon Canyon), but that deal fell apart when Ferguson was sentenced to jail for securities fraud in 1931. Ferguson laid out the development with street names as they remain today: Rambla Vista, Paseo Serra, etc. It took until the mid 1930's for development of the area to begin in earnest.

Description:
Fontana was founded in 1913 by A.B. (Azarial Blanchard) Miller, d. 1878-1941. Miller first purchased the 17,000 acres of land in 1906, a year after he began working it. Miller envisioned a booming agricultural town complete with citrus orchards, cattle and poultry farms situated along Route 66. With the formation of the Fontana Land Company in 1914 and Fontana Farms Company in 1918, Miller’s vision began to come to fruition. The Los Angeles Times printed numerous articles regarding A.B. Miller, Fontana Farms and Fontana Land companies from 1914 to 1937; articles specific to poultry farming and egg production date from 1925 to 1931.
