Description:
The Los Angeles aqueduct was bombed or otherwise vandalized in at least 10 incidents from 1924 to 1931. Cf. (1) Los Angeles Times article, 20 June 1927, “City Aqueduct Again Blasted, Dynamite Tears Out Sixteen-Foot Section, Fourth Recent Outrage Done During Night Hours, Explosion Occurs Two Miles South of Lone Pine.” The article states: “A heavy charge of dynamite exploded in the fourth attempt within the past month … shattered a sixteen-foot panel of waterway at the Puddle Creek Delta, two miles southwest of Lone Pine … Other outrages. Previous acts of violence against the Aqueduct are as follows: On the 5th inst., the side walls of a large open concrete conduit at the mouth of Cottonwood Canyon were wrecked by a charge of dynamite … May 28, 1927: Approximately 300 feet of the Aqueduct system was blown out at Big Pine … May 27, 1927: … a charge of explosive in No Name Canyon destroying about 450 feet of iron pipe … May 14, 1926: A ten-foot hole was torn out of the concrete Aqueduct by dynamite … about one mile south of the spillway in the Alabama Hills. November 24, 1924: A mob of men … opened the Alabama control gates … between Independence and Lone Pine … May 21, 1924: A heavy charge of dynamite was set off against an open portion of the Aqueduct at a point two miles north of Lone Pine. … No actual damage …” Cf. Description:
Caption for a similar photograph taken on the same occasion: Bouquet Canyon Earth-Fill Dam Rapidly Taking on Permanent Form. Work Progressing. The city's dam in Bouquet Canyon to furnish storage for both water and power and to replace the ill-fated St. Francis Dam is rising steadily each day to the tune of rumbling trucks hauling earth from the pits to the dam site. The view here is from upstream looking at the concrete covered upstream face. The white streaks are streams of water poured on to aid the concrete to cure properly [Los Angeles Times, 6 Sept. 1933].

Description:
Charles Kassler Jr. was a painter, printmaker, and lithographer. He lost a hand during a high school chemistry experiment. He studied art and architecture at Princeton University and the Chicago Art Institute. From 1925 to 1932 Kassler continued his studies while living at various times in New Mexico, Europe, and North Africa. While in France he apprenticed himself to a well-known fresco painter. He was active in Denver before moving to Los Angeles in 1933. He painted murals for the Federal Art Project and was an instructor at the Chouinard Art School (1933-34) and School of Design in Pasadena (1939).

The article states: " … Arizona’s “war” on California to prevent the building of the Metropolitan Water District’s dam at Parker got under way at the week-end with the mobilization on orders of Gov. Moeur of five soldiers and one officer of the Arizona National Guard at the dam site. California officials professed not to be much worried. The dam is to be built, not by the State or water district, but by the Federal government, and Gov. Moeur may have Uncle Sam to contend with if he interferes."

Description:
In 1934, with plans in place for United States Reclamation Service and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to build Parker Dam on the Colorado River between Arizona and California, Arizona governor Benjamin B. Moeur protested the diversion of water to California by sending members of the Arizona National Guard to the dam construction site. A local ferry service also participated under the informal name of the Arizona Navy.

Description:
The St. Francis Dam was a 200-foot high concrete gravity-arch dam built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon (near present-day Castaic and Santa Clarita). The dam collapsed on March 12, 1928 at two and a half minutes before midnight. The resulting flood killed more than 600 residents plus an unknown number of itinerant farm workers camped in San Francisquito Canyon, making it the 2nd greatest loss of life in California after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is considered the worst American civil engineering failure in the 20th century.

Description:
The clubhouse was designed by noted Los Angeles architect Robert H. Orr, and was built by Azusa contractor Charles Mace. The building is located at 1003 N. Azusa Avenue. Orr designed many structures in the Los Angeles area including the iconic Wilshire Christian Church, and he was the supervising architect for Pomona College. Orr began his career as a draftsman for the architect William H. Weeks in Salinas in 1898 and was active as an architect in the Los Angeles area by 1908. Orr founded the firm Orr, Strange, Inslee & Senefeld in 1949 and he worked with this firm up to 1962, two years before his death.

The article states: "… To obtain first hand facts about this wonder area, The Times scout car … rolled up into the San Bernardino Mountains the other day. Smooth pavement all the way from First and Broadway to the village of Pine Knot seemed almost incredible, but it is there, for the State has spent $1,500,000 building this de luxe roadway, and reducing the grade, which had run as high as 16 per cent, to a maximum of 4 per cent, creating one of the most ideal mountain roads in the world. …"

Moeur and “observe” what the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is doing about the building of a diversion dam across the river north of here. …they peered watchfully at workmen on barges … It seemed likely to go on for some time.
