Description:
The mural seen in the background titled, "Conquest of the West," was created Herman Volz - a Swiss-born painter, lithographer, decorative artist and ceramist. The Federal Building was designed by Timothy L. Pflueger, as well the Court of Pacifica, and the California State Building and Auditorium.

Bugle corps marching in the California-Nevada Department, Grand Army of the Republic parade, Santa Monica, 1938

Description:
Photograph of a youth bugle corps marching in the annual California-Nevada Department, Grand Army of the Republic parade. The boys, who range in age from approximately twelve to eighteen years, wear military dress uniforms, military hats with insignias, epaulets, and medals. They are followed by a two groups of similarly dressed boys, each group with standard bearers carrying the American flag and (presumably) their troop or organization's flag. The military groups are immediately followed by a Boy Scout troop, with additional groups seen extending into the distance. The procession follows Wilshire Boulevard and is captured here at 3rd Street. Signs on the buildings and awnings read: “…Shoes…Ultimate in Foot Comfort,” “…Shoppe 309” “Millinery Dressmaking…Silk, Yardage, Woolen,” “Maher Music Co.,” “Wilshire Cafeteria,” “Pan-Pan Studios, 318 Gifts…Tea Shop 319,” “The D.B Wright Investment… Real Estate Insurance Rentals… Property Management 321,”“Marinello” “Health Foods… 325 Santa Monica Health Food Co.,” “Medical Building 327; “…Shoppe” and “Templeman’s.” An additional store front (name illegible) sits next to a corner space drug store. Finally, a Texaco gas station and its sign are viewed next to the Leon Apartments.

Scottish bagpipe band in the Canadian Legion parade, Santa Monica, 1937

Description:
Photograph of a bagpipe band, wearing traditional Scottish highland attire, marching in the seventh annual California State convention of the Canadian Legion, British Empire Service League. The drum is imprinted with the band name and their legion post: "The procession follows street car tracks along Santa Monica Boulevard near Third Street, with the Junipher building seen at right. The building housed an S.H. Kress & Co. 5-10-25 Cent Store, a Union Pacific ticket office, a jeweler and a See's Candy store amongst other businesses. A portion of the Guaranty Trust Bank Building (221-225 Santa Monica Blvd.) is viewed down the street.

Description:
Photograph of an all female marching band and Ladies' Auxiliary groups marching in the annual parade of the California-Nevada Department, Grand Army of the Republic. They are lead by a five member band - two playing wood-wind instruments, three playing drums and bass drum. They wear dark military caps embroidered with "OUV," dark colored jackets and white skirts. They are followed by women wearing white military caps, blouses with ties, vests, and skirts. Additional women's groups proceed behind them. The procession follows Wilshire Boulevard and is captured nearing 3rd Street. Automobiles are parked along the commercial thoroughfare in front of a two-story building with a variety of stores on the ground floor. Signs on the building and printed on awnings read: "Medical Building," “[The D.B Wright Invest]ment… [Real Estate Insurance] Rentals… 321...Estate,” “Marinello” “Health Foods... 325 Santa Monica Health Food Co.,” “Medical Building 327; “…Shoppe” and “Templeman’s.” An additional store front (name illegible) sits next to a corner space drug store.
