The parade route began on 4th St. at Colorado Ave., followed north along 4th St. to Wilshire Blvd., and turned westward toward Ocean Ave. where it moved south. The procession passed the review stand at Ocean and Broadway before ending at Pico Blvd.
The marching band of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 906, participating in the California Admission Day Parade. The band is led by a drum major (at center), followed closely by three flag bearers carrying an American flag, a California flag, and the standard for the Elks Lodge No. 906, which reads, in part: “B.P.O.[E.] No. 906 [Santa] Monica Cal.” The brass band (wearing military visor caps, jackets and “Sam Browne” belts - wide belts with a narrow strap across the chest) follow. Spectators line the route following 4th Street. Here they are photographed at 4th and Santa Monica Blvd., facing east toward H.S. Henshey’s department store. Signs on adjacent businesses read: “Noonan’s,” “Santa Monica Sporting,” “Southern California Edison,” and “…Business College.”
In 1937, Santa Monica hosted the California Admission Day celebration and convention of the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West. The three-day event (held September 8-10), commemorated the 87th anniversary of California’s admission to the Union. The Los Angeles Times published several articles between September 7th and 10th that described planned festivities, but a more detailed account of the celebration can be found in The Grizzly Bear, a magazine published by the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West (1905-1954). The article is titled, "Happy Memories of Admission Day," The Grizzly Bear, 1 Oct. 1937: 3.
