Bird's-eye view of downtown from top of Hill St. Tunnel, Los Angeles, circa 1921-1923

Description:
This is a bird's-eye view from the top of the Court Hill, above the Hill St. Tunnel, looking down Hill St. towards 1st St. The tunnel was one of several built in the early twentieth century in order to connect LA's historic Downtown to the suburbs in the west through the palisade of hills separating them. At the foreground of the image, we can see park benches placed strategically for people to enjoy the view. We see streetcar tracks emerging out of the tunnels blending into the busy streets in the background. To the left, we can see the board to a Hotel La Crosse, and to the right, there are two boards, with the signs, "Starting Sat. Mar. 24 Charles Chaplin" and, "Mar. 26 Kolb & Dill Now and Then" partly obscured by a pole. The negative is slightly damaged at the top center.

In 1934, with plans in place for United States Reclamation Service and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to build Parker Dam on the Colorado River between Arizona and California, Arizona governor Benjamin B. Moeur protested the diversion of water to California by sending members of the Arizona National Guard to the dam construction site. A local ferry service also participated under the informal name of the Arizona Navy.

“Marriage of Figaro” production with Lou Ann Wyckoff, Roderick Risto, Pryor Bowen, and Robert Mahoney, Barnum Hall, Santa Monica, 1958

Description:
Santa Monica Civic Opera performance of Act 1 of “The Marriage of Figaro.” Figaro (portrayed by Roderick Risto) stands center and sings while Count Almaviva (singer Pryor Bowen), his page Cherubino (played by female singer Lou Ann Wyckoff), Don Basilio (Robert Mahoney) and several cast members portraying peasants listen. The aristocrats wear 18th century style attire – coats with deep cuffs, waistcoats (vests), breeches and stockings. Figaro wears a shirt with lace collar and cuffs. The peasant women wear full skirts with overskirts tied at the waist, peasant blouses covered with lace-up bodices, and caps covering their hair. The men wear coats, breeches and cravats. The setting is a sparsely furnished room in Count Almaviva’s palace, with ornately painted walls, an end table, chair and footstool. Balcony shot allows for views of the entire stage, musicians in and outside of the orchestra pit, and numerous audience members. Performed at Barnum Hall, Santa Monica.
